Just want to get this out on the forum...

I'll be hosting a listening session for the Van Alstine Biro L/1s and any other goodies the folks who are planning to attend will be bringing on Saturday August 23rd. It'll start around noon. Please let me know if you plan to attend and PM me if you need directions. Should be fun! :)

Most people just don't announce they're going. Especially for if plans or emergencies come up at the last moment.

Suggestion, bring your worst CDs!
Bring along some of your worst CDs to play: the harshest, brightest, most sibilant, steeley, and congested CDs in your collection.  You might find that the CDs were not the problem, that your speakers simply were not coping with them well.  The first track on "Clair Marlo: Let It Go"  Sheffield Lab #CD-29 comes to mind.  This track causes ear bleed on most systems. but plays back perfectly and amazingly musically on a T7 and Fet Valve system driving the Biros.  Note that the remaster of this onto a different brand CD is pretty awful.

It would be nice to have the L/1s 2-3 feet from the closest wall, that the wall behind them was as non-reflective as possible, and that then were on wood (or shot, sand or kitty liter filled metal stands) putting the tweeters about at seated ear level.  Yes, they will sound better with the grill clothes off (and don't look too shabby that way either).  The L/1s are available in natural oak (samples supplied) or black oak.

For your information, the Biro Kensington subwoofer add a seamless, high definition (Q = 0.5) bass response down to shake the room level.  When used with the subwoofer, the L/1 ports are plugged to change the low frequency slope to match the subwoofer.  The Kensington can be driven from either line level (preferred) or speaker level.  It has variable crossover frequency and level controls, a phase invert switch, and a crossover bypass switch to be used directly out of a surround sound processor.

Thanks for your interest.    Frank Van Alstine

I have the Sheffield clair marlo CD, I'll bring it with me.  This used to me one of my mainstay system test CD's back in the early 90's when I had a Speaker Works car audio system, along with Sheffield Drive.

So are you telling me all my old, poorly recorded, dynamically compressed Rock CD's are going to transform and become magical..because of the speakers? The PT gear does wonders to cr*ppy recordings, but they still sound nothing like a great recording. I don't recall trying a poorly recorded CD, to see if it sounded any better on the Biro's. I'll give it a try if you say so :D

Frank,

THANK YOU for sending out the Biros for us to audition! :)

They are quite different in presentation than my Onix Ref 1s, yet equally enjoyable but in a different way...

Excellent!!! The excitement is building...:)

Looks like Crytweaks, Sa-dono, Shokunin, and John Casler are confirmed so far...:)

2 people have already PM'd me to say they won't be able to make it...:(

Let's see if we can target to start around 12 noon...Subway sandwiches good w/ everyone? Other ideas are welcome! If this is gonna be the entire turnout, I think I can manage to provide food and drinks...Anyone w/ special dietary requirements will need to speak up or bring their own food or starve!

I'm looking forward to seeing all the confirmed folks again! It's always a blast...

Maybe we should cryo-tweak the "sweet seat" and see if it adds anything.

Looking forward to hearing the BIRO L/1s.
