Thomas Newman soundtrack recommendations?
« on: 5 Jun 2007, 02:47 pm »
Hello everyone.

I had the TV on in the background this weekend and "Pay it Forward" came on.  I wasn't paying attention until I caught some of the background music and realized how similar it sounded to the "American Beauty" soundtrack - which I enjoy.  Some quick research showed that both soundtracks were composed by Thomas Newman, and that he has composed far more film music than I imagined.

Besides "American Beauty", does anyone have any additional favorites from among his work that they'd particularly recommend?

Thanks!

I especially liked his sountracks to Road To Perdition and Meet Joe Black.

Thanks, Rob!

I think I've seen less than half of Road to Perdition and none of Meet Joe Black, so I'll go dig up some online samples.

I picked up The Shawshank Redemption a while ago, but unfortunately found it to be quite boring....

Yeah, I saw that on the list but wasn't even aware he did it.  Guess it didn't make much of an impression.  Often a film score doesn't stand up very well on it's own- it's designed to compliment the action onscreen.  But the two I listed are very good on their own, IMO.
