Multiple drivers
« on: 1 Jun 2007, 03:27 pm »
I am planning on a big open baffle to use for all my single drivers (in a mono system).  Would it be better to mount lots of drivers on the baffle (so some will be toward the edges), or come up with some kind of interchangable sub-baffle to switch them out?  (I'm planning on putting a couple of woofers at the bottom to help out the bass.)
Thanks,
Pete

I have been playing around with OB for a couple of years now, and in my experience, keeping the bass helper drivers OFF the main baffle is a good thing.

Wish I took my own advice when I built my latest ones - oh, wait, that is how I now KNOW to give this advice!

You can look into magnet mounting the woofers behind the main baffle, and allowing them to fire through the main baffle, that is my next approach.

You can also build a separate baffle for the bass, that is what many others have done.

Have fun!

Two questions:
1. What problems did you encounter with the woofers on the same baffle?
2.  Can you describe (or show a picture) how to magnet mount?

P.S.  I should have said that the FR drivers I'd like to use are various sizes (and shapes), so the hole needs to get bigger and smaller as I change drivers!

1 - woofer on same baffle as full ranger - I find that the vibrations from the woofer transate into a muddying of the mids from the full ranger - isolating the woofer cures this, and it never happened with the woofer was in a separate baffle.

2 - I have yet to do it, but some pics can be found with JohninCR's methods, or others.

I intend to build a Tie Fighter subwoofer, that fires through the main baffle, for my next install.

Darrell Hawthorne showcases a wonderful, simple, and easy to implement version right here, with respect to his big old 15's.

Thanks for the voice of experience, and the suggestions to the magnet mounts.
What's the Tie Fighter sub?  I only found a commercial sub with a google search.

I received the SI's recently and magnet mounted them using a piece of aluminum plate that's about 12" long and bent at 90 degrees for about 5". I then clamped this to one of my old Linn speaker stands. The drivers are still breaking in. I had a question though, the aluminum I'm using is about 1/8" thick and when I just move it with my hand it bounces back and forth until finally it is dead still again. Others on the Hawthorne forum have done the same type of mounting but isn't this bad? I thought we wanted the driver to be rock solid at all times. If my hand can cause vibrations by gently pushing the mount won't the audio produced by the driver cause all sorts of vibrations, especially bass frequencies?

Pete, the Tie Fighter is just my silly name for the DIY sub I will construct.  Similar in design and execution to this test baffle, shown with my old Rockford car sub, an excellent OB sub!

That would be an H baffle....but I prefer the Tie Fighter name.

My first crack at it Josh, I promise the Tie Fighter sub will be far more attractive, and more worthy!
