Yet Another Dedicated Line Question
« on: 1 Jun 2007, 09:43 am »
Next week we are having some electrical work done.  I am taking the opportunity to get a dedicated line installed :) I understand that one way to do this is to use 12/3 cable.  The digital and analog outlets share the same ground and neutral, but have a their own hot wire.  I am unclear how this is hooked up back at the breaker box.  Is one of the hot wires hooked up to one of the breakers by itself?

You'd either daisy chain (put in series) the two outlets, to use the same hot, neutral, and ground, or you could run a 12/4, which has two hots on the same phase and shares a neutral and ground.  The electrician should know whether this is up to code in your area (and it is up to code, depending on how it's implemented).  One hot would go to the digital and one to the analog.

Thanks for the info.  I thought it was 12/3 wire that had two hots and shared the same neutral and ground, this is the first time I heard of 12/4.  If we use 12/4, does that mean one of the breakers would have a "hot" wire only attached?  I'm sure the electrician will know this, I'm just curious.
