Coronet Build - Question about voltages.
« on: 24 May 2007, 05:48 pm »
Hi - I'm relatively new to the DIY scene and I have a question about testing voltages on the Coronet2.  If someone could point me in the direction of a 'this is what you do and what to look for' thread or comment on the previous, it would be of great help to me.  I plugged it in and fired it up and the led goes from green to red in about 3 to 5 seconds ( I assume I have the led in backwards -not a big deal)  and the 5Y3 RCA tube immediate starts to glow.  No other glow is observed on the 12Au and 12AX tubes though.  I just want to make sure i'm putting the black lead / red lead from the multimeter in the correct spots to test voltages.  Thanks.

The circuit boards are marked for test voltages.  Check out the silkscreen.

Okay if I did this right, I have 391.4 at the 365V mark.  At the 220R I have 371.4 volts instead of the 150V marked.  All of the 150 and 155V marks are around 371 in fact.  I have obviously fudged something up.  If anyone has suggestions, feel free.  I have checked the proper placement of caps, res, etc and am fairly confident that they are in their proper place but then it would work if all was well.

Sounds like you have no heaters.  Check the 5V windings and the heater voltages.

Make sure you have the regulator 5y3gt tube socket properly oriented. I bet thats your problem .

I rechecked and I believe that the 5Y3 tube is correctly oriented.  I tested the voltages on the G/GY/G connections and all 3 are at 4.49 volts.  Checking on the other side of the diodes, I have 9.03 volts.  I have 397.4 at the 365 volt screen mark, etc.  All of the voltages are over what they should be.  I have 0.4 volts on the center hole of the three 12A% tubes.  Could someone post a closeup of their power hook-up (the LOONLOON) one specifically.  Thanks.

Make sure the G and G/Y wires are not mixed up.  Are diodes in correctly?  Oh wait!  Check the 5W power resistor (the white one).  Looks like you have voltage on one side of it and not the other.  Or maybe a heater short on one of the tubes.

Try removing all tubes and firing up.  See if you get maybe 8Vdc or so on heater output.  If not, you may have solder short somewhere.

I believe that latter is the culprit.  I suspect also that I either have a solder short or a dry socket as it were.   I'll go back over all, since I already took it apart and check the solder joints and the 5w resistor and then move forward.  Thanks.

Well - as it turned out I ordered a 5W 1.8K ohm resistor instead of a 1.8 5W.  That seemed to fix the issue I was having.  Sounds sweet.  Thread closed.
