Can anyone recommend a good Indoor AM/FM Antenna?
« on: 23 May 2007, 04:16 pm »
I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good indoor AM/FM antenna? I just purchased a NAD tuner and the simple wire antenna for FM isn't doing a very good job and an outside antenna isn't feasible in my situation.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I use a Godar passive FM antenna with good results.

I have previously used a Terk amplified FM antenna, and wasn't happy with it as it amplifies not only the signal, but the noise as well.

I got mine from www.partsexpress.com.  It was less than $50 if I remember correctly.

I use this Philips antenna. Not because it's dirt cheap but because it works better than both the standard "T" antenna that came with my Denon tuner as well as my Delhi rooftop antenna which picked up interference on some channels.

Terk makes a variety of very good antennas.

How do you have the antenna set up?

Do a Google search for "J-pole antennas"...they're vertically polarized and have a bit more gain than a dipole does, might make a difference. For the FM band, you can build one out of 300-ohm twinlead and hang it on a tack.

A simple T antenna behind my equipment rack.

If your in the boonies then you may need more, and I would strongly suggest something on the roof, but if you're a suburbanite then you're probably OK with the standard Y wire antenna. You may need to play with the location where it works best, but other indoor powered antenna's really don't do a whole lot more than the wire does.

Enjoy,
Bob

I'd suggest reading what the author of this website has to say.  I've not yet ordered his antennae but plan to in the future.

I hate to admit it here but I purchased an amplified antenna from Radio Shack last summer (part #15-1859) after trying a standard Di-pole and various rabbit ear antennas I had laying in attempt to get better reception on my basement workshop tuner.  It made an improvement in amount the stations I was able to pull in and reduction of background noise.

As I recall it was $25 and has a 30 day money back return policy.  I'd give it a try if I were you.

Thanks everyone, I am sure one, or several, of your suggestions will work for me.
