Danny, I have a pair of original X-LS tweeters sitting on the shelf, and I bet there are a number of other folks who do as well. If they would be suitable for these projects, we might be able to stock the class with a number of tweeters.

Scott, You better post an address and further info about where folks can send contributions as soon as you can.

Hey James, Do you think we might could give these kids a page at the Stereomojo site? We could give some information about the project and ask for contributions. We could then list contributors and give those contributors a link to their site for their contribution. This might motivate some corporate action and maybe get these kids some inductors, caps, resistors, or more drivers.

Around 80 assorted inductors.
40 plus terminal posts

Danny, here's another idea: The Ninja has customers who are pulling entire crossovers out of their speakers. Perhaps the old crossovers could be sent down there to have their parts recycled? I'm not sure how easy it is to disassemble a Rocket crossover board - I know the caps on my X-LS board were tough to remove without damaging them (glued down good).

HI Danny,
I too have a few drivers sitting around. Nothing special. I think I have about 6 pieces of the 8" MCM woofers (poly), a few 6" Aluminum cone MCM woofers and a few VIFA tweeters. The 6" aluminum woofers may have been used in the past??

While I don't have any new capacitors, I have boxes of crossover capacitors that I have taken out of various speakers I have modified. If you think they could find use for them, I would be more than happy to send them along. Never hurts to have pieces like this around for testing and playing?

Let me know your thoughts.

By the way, it's great that you can donate your time to help kids get even more involved in this hobby. Hats off to you.

Thank you very much. Nothing wrong with used capacitors. I think they were using used capacitors to some extent already. Some in-expensive poly caps would really help. Many were using electrolytic caps from here and there and doubling up caps to get the needed value. Same for inductors... I knew of one case where two were used in line to get a larger value.

I don't mind donating some time to this project. It is well worth it and very rewarding to see young kids get excited about this stuff much like I was when I was there age.

Scott Clark is pretty generous to Gary and I too. We driver down the day before. First Gary drives a little over two hours to my house, then we drive a little less than three hours to Scott's house. Scott feeds us supper and allows us to stay at his house. The next morning we head to school and get started. The kids are excused from there other classes unless it is important that they have to be there for a specific class. They make an all day event of it. Kids are making adjustments to their external networks, seeing the measured responses, and having a blast.

We then break for lunch and chow down on the delicious cafeteria food.

Then after lunch we move on to the listening evaluations.

It is just as much fun for Gary and I as it is for the kids.

That's sounds great Danny (except for the cafeteria food

). I will get a package together and send along when an address becomes available.

I will also include several of the large green Illusion PIO caps that I have taken out of ASL Hurricanes. They can play with using these in bypass applications as well as in their tube amp projects.

I left to drive from TX to Iowa for my daughter's college graduation Fri. morning and get back to this!! Danny, you have been busy. Thanks to all that have expressed interest in this project. Let me think how to do this on the grand scale-- I know that several local physics teachers that I have talked to have expressed interest. I think that I will put in a call to the Science Coordinator for the state of TX-- what could it hurt? Whoa, a state full of high school kids that suddenly realize that earpods just don't do it anymore. Now there is a concept worth getting behind.

Seriously, I have to wrap up the school year in the next couple of days. Let me figure out how to do this. In the meantime, I will be happy to respond to any questions or comments either here or at rsclark(at)taylortel(dot)net.

I take education very seriously. Please let me, and others, know the best ways we might help. I do not have parts per se. However, I might be able to rustle up some expierenced but useful gear. My guess is a spot of cash to buy exactly what might be needed would work too? I'd be happy to send cash to you or Danny to be used at your discretion for the kids.

Wow, the notion of kids listening to fine music through excellent gear and learning all the while.

As a 16 year old I can vouch that this hobby is very rewarding and teaches you a ton. When I build enough capital (a few hundred dollars) I can start building some GR kit speakers to sell. Then I might have enough money to start designing speakers of my own. I love experimenting with different designs and modeling enclosures. I too wish that my school taught a speaker building unit, it sounds like a lot of fun

Well folks, here we go. Two more high schools have agreed to build speakers as an end of year project- and that was just after making a few calls between exams yesterday. I think that we are starting something that is going change a lot of kids lives, but it is going to take some help and involvement from the audiophile community.

We will operate this under the West Texas Science Center, which is a tax exempt corporation created to bring projects like this to schools in the Abilene area (but not limited to that area). Hold checks and speakers for a few weeks while I work out details, but don't forget about us. I'll be in touch with Danny and Gary to get their advice as well.

I wonder if it would be helpful to create a regional circle here at Audio Circle just for this project. It would give the kids a good place to come to ask questions and even post information about their projects. It might also help drive interest and support. What do you think of this idea JohnR?

Cool! I grew up in Abilene - small world, this DIY speaker thing. As the TCU t-shirt guy in "Tin Cup" said: "I'm in!"
