What tubes do I need in my cornet to get "bloom"?

Right now I'm getting a more sterile sound then I would like.

Thanks.

Marbs,

You have all silver wiring, solid state (line and amp) amplification and a moving coil cartridge.....vinyl doesn't get much more sterile than that.  Throwing bloomy new tubes in the Cornet may help, but probably won't cure all vinyl your ills.

My guess, at least

Has it had a chance to break in yet?

Mullard 5AR4, Telefunken (maybe Amperex but Mullard was too much as driver tubes for my phonostage, vinyl one) 12AX7 and Amperex 12AU7 would be my choice.  BTW, I am telling you Koetsu = bloom.

I used Phillip Miniwatt 5Y3 and Tungsram 12AU7s in my Clarinet. They sound more revealing in my system before.

Oh yeah...

Thanks for the tube suggestions guys, it's appreciated.

If you're using 12au7's I have couple of CBS/Hytrons and a pair of RCA Clear Tops waiting for my Candela you could try any time.  I haven't had either pair in a preamp yet, but assume they are good to go.

Like someone else said how "old" is it?  Mine got progressivly warmer as the caps broke in.  What caps are you running?

I wonder if ANY 5AR4 (even cheap Sovtek or JJ) might not give you a more lush sound than a 5Y3

You've already got the Mullard rec so I won't repeat it, but I'll toss out that I found more difference between long and short plate mullards than I did between short plate Mullards and new production tubes.  So watch which you get if you are looking for the richness.  I liked the Amperex short plates better than the Mullard short plates, but the long plates are a whole other animal.

Depending on HOW much richness you want you might take a look at RCA black plates.  I thought they traded too much detail, but YMMV.

ahhh, Rob, forgot you bought the Dood preamp recently  :duh:

I'm at a loss as to why it would be 'sterile' then.

Try lowering the cart loading.  Bring it down as low as you can without sacrificing the top end.
