Does anyone know of a wireless headphone system that works with regular headphones?  In other words, not a set of headphones designed to be wireless, but adding some kind of transmitter and headphone amp to a regular set of headphones...

Yes, it's called a portable FM radio.  It's wireless, it has an amp, and it works with your regular headphones!

Ok, seriously now.  An FM radio walkman or something like that is about the only thing I can think of.  You can get a plug-in FM transmitter for your CD player, vinyl rig, or other source of choice, make it broadcast on an empty FM band, and then pick it up with the portable FM receiver.  This is the only system I can think of at the moment.

This is actually for a childhood development center for learning-impaired children...they use some audio techniques for learning, and they want to put wireless headphones in the session rooms.  The headphones are modified to provide a vibration component, so they can't just buy wireless headphones...they need a wireless transmitter to use with these modified headphones...

Be careful with the wireless monitoring systems. Most of them power very low impedance headphones (+/- 16 ohms) and will sound poor with headphones like an BeyerDynamic or a Sennheiser at around 300 ohms. However, if you’re a Grado fan then your likely ok.
Secondly, the audio fidelity of UHF is only so good. It depends where the money is spent. Most of these devices put importance on range and variety of frequencies since they need to work on stage and alongside many other wireless devices.

Sennheiser makes wireless headphones as do many others.


Here is a wireless device (Bluetooth) that transmits from an iPod to a device that’s line level so you can hook it to a portable headphone amp.

BradJudy...thanks for the recommendations.  I had actually found the Shure wireless system, so this looks like a good solution.

boead...also thanks.  The headphones being used are modified Beyerdynamics DT990.  I'll keep the impedence info in mind...
