Why is VideoGon such a mess?
« on: 16 May 2007, 03:12 am »
Is it just me or does anyone else find V'gon infuriating to use?  Don't the damn ads ever expire?  The listings are clogged with ancient listings, some of them over a year old!  And only 1 in 10 sellers ever seem to change the status to SOLD when they sell something. :duh:

Bob, it's NOT you!!!
I've lurked there too and well, no responses at all from the sellers and a ton of items listed...and old as ever. It's the same company as audiogon, is it not?  I wonder how much they charge for an ad there?  You'd figure, for $6 now on audiogon, they at least let you post more than 3 pictures and bigger size too, right?  But, NO!!!

I've bought at V'gon but never sold.  Mostly I just can't understand why/how ads don't ever expire! :banghead:  Ads only last 2 freakin' weeks on Agon and they're hounding you for another $6, but the Vgon dead soldiers lay on the battlefield for years.  And I wonder about their notification system since it's often hard to get a response.

The search is different too.  You have to enter three digits instead of 2 at agon.

It's a dead site - they have to keep enough ads there to make it look full.  Wouldn't be surprised if it's pulled soon.

Too bad for them - the video market is many, many times larger than 2 channel audio is.....if they could ever make it work, it would likely far more $$$ transactions going on there.  Where do folks buy and trade used video gear nowadays on the web?

Or is the concept of video too new, and the goods overall too poorly made for the long run, to have a vibrant secondary market for them?  TV technology are advancing repidly - perhaps a used TV is a TV almost no one wants??

I sure hope there's someplace I can still get a used CRT projector when I can afford one.  That's about the only thing I ever browsed for at Videogon.

I've sold a few things on Videogon, one time because my ad was still there long after the listing officially expired.  And hey, the listings are free.  So I guess Videogon has its upside for sellers, but I see that it can be annoying for would-be buyers.

Home Theater Forum (http://www.hometheaterforum.com) has a hardware-for-sale section.  Selling prices tend to be pretty good.

I'll probably buy mine from Curt Palme before long.  I sold my DLP PJ with the idea of buying a new one when I got moved, but I might just leapfrog the next digital and go right to CRT.  There are a couple very very good dealers that sell on Ebay- that's probably a better bet than Videogon right now.

One last gripe- does anyone notice that most of the dolts there are trying to sell used digital PJs for more than they cost new?  Sure, you might have spent $4,ooo on it, but six months later it's $2,5oo new.  I can't blame 'em for trying but that probably explains why some of the listings run into years without a sale.

it's a dead site since AVSFORUM stopped licensing (paying for it), you have to be a member on www.avsforum.com to post I believe now.. which sucks... but that site has huge traffice otherwise it's ebay time..

I've bought things off of videogon, but I've never been able to sell or even get a response off videogon.

Hey guys, I had a Sony V70 CRT before switching to a DLP projector and would not go back.  Unless you can do the calibration and maintenance yourself they are just a PITA - noisy, hot, old technology, big, complex - but great image!  Modern digital projectors have come down in price so and the technology has improved so much that the image quality gap has closed significantly.

Back to the thread - IMO V'gon has become a non-event compared with A'gon.

What's a V70?  You don't mean a G70, do you?  I would suspect no one in their right mind would go from a G70 to a DLP! :o
