What I was told if you are needing to run more graphics intensive programs parallels is not a viable option though.

Why would the PC environment be used for graphics intensive programs? Gaming?

I don’t know? PC’s can’t do graphics! How silly. Must be those stupid time wasting video games.

OK, so the PC environment would be used for gaming. Got it. I am aware that there are far more games developed for PC than Mac...

Be certain you buy a Mac with a very large hard drive...considering you will be partitioning it for both OS X and Windows (Vista or whatever).

I love Parallels in Coherence mode. There's not even any switching of windows, it's like working within the mac OS. Plus you can have windows program icons (shorcuts) on your mac desktop, and a simple double click starts the app. And as far as graphics are concerned, I run AutoCad with no problem.

My wife's macbook has a 100gb hdd partitioned for a future stable vista, it will have 60gb to live in.  Did you get the pro, because the macbook will not play hl2 very well.  Mac's are still not gaming machines.  They aren't even announcing a Santa Clara laptop, yet.

I think the "bad gaming machine" stigma is slowly disappearing for macs. Realistically they perform very well when compared with the equivalent PC.  But lets face it, the real problem is the software itself. My Mac plays WoW extremely well. Better than my old PC could ever hope to. Plus I can multitask while playing the game without any detriment to playability, at least from what I can tell. What the big problem is the lack of software and poorly integrated software that is currently available. If the software is good then you can play anything you want on a mac a PC can.

Video Gaming requires advanced video processors. ATI/AMD and nVidia being the two top players. This technology is constantly changing and upgrades are something that you want to do as often as you can afford. Software drivers being released each month or so keep different games at peek compatibility and give the manufacturers the ability to constantly tweak YOUR system making their products more valuable to you, the end user.

Gaming formats like OGL and DX are also dominant and in the last few years, DX has proved most popular. In case you don’t know, DX is a Microsoft invention.

As far as the variety of games not being available for the Mac, it comes down to that market share thing. Mac’s account for less then 4% in the US and the vast majority of them are in the professional sector so that leaves the market share for the Mac consumer/gamer VERY small and likely not worth the investment to developers.

Installing Windows on your Mac to play games is a solution, certainly and I’m sure Microsoft is happy about that too. Maybe when people start using Vista on their MacIntels and realize how similar it is to MacOSX they may even switch.

I have been produce monthly magazines since 1988 (I have also produced hundreds of comic books!) on Windows PC’s starting with Windows 3.0 using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Aldus Page Maker.
I have also been producing broadcast video with Adobe Premier and Pinnacle products under Windows for many years. Additionally I produce websites and interactive products (including Kiosks) with Macromedia wares under Windows for more then a decade now. I have been using my Windows computers for listening, managing and editing audio for over a decade.

I’ve been playing “cool” video games since Wolfenstein 3D. I’ve had the Voodoo2, Vood3, GeForces 1, 2, 3, 4… Radeons since the first one. I’ve fragged with the best of them build Civilizations on Earth and Alpha Century, Managed Cities, Railroads and Amusement Parks. I’ve killed monsters, aliens, cyborgs and Nazis, I’ve flown planes, ships and even a few Starships.

Who says you need a Mac to do cool stuff like, you know iLife stuff – LOL!!!!

Anything you can do,
I can do better.
I can do anything
Better than you.

No, you can't.
Yes, I can. No, you can't.
Yes, I can. No, you can't.
Yes, I can,
Yes, I can!

Anything you can be
I can be greater.
Sooner or later,
I'm greater than you.

No, you're not. Yes, I am.
No, you're not. Yes, I am.
No, you're NOT!. Yes, I am.
Yes, I am!

Anything you can buy
I can buy cheaper.
I can buy anything
Cheaper than you.

Anything you can wear
I can wear better.
In what you wear
I'd look better than you.

In my coat?
In your vest! In my shoes?
In your hat! No, you can't!
Yes, I can
Yes, I CAN!

Anything you say
I can say faster.
I can say anything
Faster than you.

Just for good natured debate (I do, for a living, and have done many of the same things you have), a good argument would be that iLife does a huge percentage of what the pieces of software you menioned can do. The difference is price and ease of use. Your programs (and mine, etc) are specialized, highly complicated programs that cost well over $1500 to purchase new. iLife is extremely easy for most people to use, and costs something like $120, or is free with consumer level Macs.

I also have a question for Vista users. One of the things I love about OSX vs XP is that out of the box, OSX can read/open EPS, PDF, .AI, .PSD, .PS files and more graphics/publishing file types. No downloads/installations of any kind. XP could not do that, is Vista the same way?

No, those are Adobe app extensions (mostly) and require licensing from Adobe. MS has competitive products to Adobe. Even Flash isn’t bundled or preinstalled.

True!

Vista Premium and Ultimate come with Video editing software that supports HiDef and DVD mastering software with menu creation that is really VERY good. I was surprised how good it is, I like it better then the Pinnacle apps. I showed a friend how to use it with his new Panasonic video camera and in no time he was making DVD’s – he was really impressed too.
Vista also comes with some really nice Photo editing and management applications that again are really easy to use. Media Player 11 is easy to use too and they have all sorts of other stuff that’s very much like iLife apps.

Jason,

Its been a while!

Congrats on your marriage!  I'm coming up to my 4th anniversary.. its been good, how time flies.

I went back to Mac a bit over a  year ago and got my wife to switch too.  I use an iMac though since I need the screen real estate (for photo editing).

Way to keep in control during that incident in the parking lot!

Do say hi to Wayne & Tyson for me. I've been pretty quiet on the audio front these past few years.   :?

Cheers,

- Jay
