I had a question regarding using the oppo 981hd as a "universal player" with the avp 16 pre/pro. I ofcourse understand that 5.1 analog shall be used to play DVD-A and SACD formats, and coaxial s/pdif for dolby/dts encoded DVDs. However, what is the optimal connection for standard cds and or HDCDs since the oppo 981hd has only 1 digital coax out? I was always under the understanding that CDs always sounded better in the digital realm(with coaxial than say fiber optic). Yet as stated above i cant hook up the oppo s/pdif both to CD and DVD s/pdif input of the avp 16. Isnt the CD Coaxial input of the AVP 16 worth taking advantage of since it disables the video circuit when a connection is made to the cd input?

Did you find a solution to your question? I was looking at an AVP 16 and was wondering the same thing.

In the case of Oppo,  the best hook-up would be:

Oppo Coaxial to AVP16 CD-Coax.
Oppo analog 7.1 to AVP16 Ext7.1 Input.

When playing HDCD, the coaxial is fine, when playing DVD-A and SACD, then switch to Ext7.1.

Is there a way to make it work for movies too? I only use the Oppo for standard CD's, and for DVD's...the Oppo manual makes it sound like you can't use both digital outs at once (nor do I have an optical cable here to try)...so in that case, how different is listening to audio via the DVD digital input in 'bypass' compared to the CD coax input?

You can connect a single coaxial from Oppo to AVP16, and that will take care of both movies and music CD.
