Questions about SL-1300
« on: 10 May 2007, 10:30 pm »
Can any of you guys help -- I have an SL-1300 here -- sorry, no 1301 or mk. II, just the original.

It appears to have an AT cart on it, but a friend looked at it and couldn't see any model number on it.  Is there a way to determine what this is?

Also, it's in pretty decent shape, even the cover, and wonder if anybody could take a stab at whatit might be worth.  I need to move it out of here and the agon blue book has none listed.

Thanks,

Jim

Jim,

If the cartridge is of the vintage I suspect, the model number is on the top of the cartridge and is visible only when removed from the headshell.

The Audio Technica cartridges are often private labled (i.e. the same cartridge will have many different model numbers so that it cannot be price shopped from store to store.)  If the cartridge you have is a dual magnet model with a colored stylus assembly that mounts from the bottom, this is definitely the case. The styli are actually interchangeable and the level in the lineup is noted by color: red was low (conical if I remember correctly.) Green was higher, and ivory and orangy brown were above those. (The top styli often had a built in stylus guard and a Sibata tip.)  The stylus can be removed by sliding up and backwards simultaneously, if you are looking down at the underside of the cartridge, with it removed from the arm.  When it is seated in properly, it will "snap" into place.

These styli are common and plentiful: you shouldn't have a problem finding a replacement. Genuine AT styli have the AT logo on the plastic behind the cantilever.  They were pretty good cartridges, with excellent seperation, due to AT's prorietary dual magnet design.

I hope this helps.

A search of completed listings on good old eBay turned these up -

$175, $50 & $100 respectively. I guess it depends whose bidding and how well informed they are. Oh, and one sold 2 days ago in Germany for 132 euro!

Shame it's fully automatic, a semi auto1400 would be a great candidate for TCG's $400 makeover

Nels and Jim,

Many thanks for the responses!  Jim, I did look at eBay but didn't see anything listed, but I suspect that I'm looking in the wrong place, or something else is up as eBay seems to return some strange results lately.  Makes no sense, but without looking into it further I can't come up with anything else right now.

Nels,  thanks for the AT history lesson :-).  Assuming I have a friend remove the cartridge, I'll get a model number, or since the value of this thing isn't that much, maybe we'll just inspect the stylus and be done with it.  I wonder if Technics shipped these with a standard cartridge -- if so, I'm guessing the guy who had it before me just went that route.

Wish he had bought a 1301 or Mk. II.

Thanks again,

Jim
