A cone by any other name may sound as sweet! But will it fit?
The generic 1.5" tall by 1.25" diameter cone is available under many brand names and through many sources. And although the form fit and function seems similar, there are some subtle differences. The truth is that many of these cones are produced in China by a screw-machine manufacture named Yun and are sold through distribution channels only. The image is generic and provided by Yun. This company makes them for Adona as well as a few other companies, for example Parts express. We have purchased some of the ones from Parts Express in the past and have sold them under the name Dayton, but these are not the ones included with our audio racks. Anyone willing to invest about $10000.00 can also have cones custom made for them.
It was brought to our attention that some mis-information existed, when a gentleman purchased a used Adona rack on Audiogon. This rack had black cones and he wanted gold ones. Not a problem, since he was told that he could simply purchase replacement cones from Parts Express. Apparently the seller had read this on Audiocircle. The purchaser was very upset when he called me, thinking that something was wrong with his rack when the cones did not fit. After lots of confusion (and some damaged cones) we discovered the problem.
As stated in our ads, all Adona racks use industry-standard 1/4 inch coupling devices. To an inexperienced person, 1/4 inch threads look the same as 6mm threads. Unfortunately they are so close that you can force it, well almost (as was the case above). It will certainly damage either the cone, or worse yet the rack.
I have included a photo of one of the cones we use with our racks (right), along side the Parts Express version (left). Sonically the cones are similar, but they are built to different specifications. There are several differences, but pay particular attention to the threads. Please be careful when trusting the advice of others, without first consulting the manufacturer.
Sincerely,
Paul Lemanski
