New Dodd Audio Amps !!!

Still a work in progress but they are getting there. Here is a pic of just one of them partially assembled.

Not shown in the pic is the matching Blue bottom plate (just like the top one), then there will be six 3" tall, by 3" in diameter, chrome spikes to hold it up. No amps stands needed for these. Also not shown are all the tubes.

Just to give you some perspective of the size of these amps, the towel that they are setting on is 30" by 57".

Each amp is 19.5" wide, 33.5" deep, and 18" tall. Weight is about 250 to 275 pounds each. All is milled Aluminum. Output is rated at 280 watts into 8 ohms. I'll let Gary chime in with further info on the internals. The inside is just as much a work of art as the outside. The finish is the same on the inside too.

No expense was spared and the best of everything went into these amps.

The finish is Chrome and metallic Blue powder coat with a clear powder coat over it.

I'll post more pics as I get them from Gary. He'll have some more during different stages of assembly.

Oh yea, retail price for a pair of these is $50,000. Since they are currently not sold through dealers (as this is the only pair), Gary said he'd do a couple more sets and let them go for $30,000 a pair, and you can pic any colors you want. I am pretty happy with the metallic Blue.  :thumb: Once they are being carried by a dealer (or dealers) I would image the price will be pretty fixed at the $50,000 mark, so if you have this kind of money to drop on a set of amps, now is the time.

A bigger hammer, is a better hammer!!

Those are killer looking!

Hey, are those liquid filled gauges?

These are mono blocs, right?

Cheers

The gauges are built in bias meters. There is one meter for each bank of tubes. It uses six KT-88's per amp. The front end uses three 7044's. These amps will actually output 110 watts of power and still be in class A.

And yes they are mono-blocks.

Can not wait to listen to these works of art.

Gary and Danny were talking about these over a year ago and the photos do them all the justice plus some.
Nice work Gary and hope these will make RMAF, from what Danny said today sounds like it may happen.

Danny will have to make rolling crates for them to stay in and take a pair of bookshelf to RMAF this year as these will take all the weight and room in the trailer aa

Yesterday I got to have a look at these first hand. Pictures don't do them justice and words cannot describe how good these amps look. I have never seen anything like them. I can't wait to see them again fully assembled.

Whoa --- those be some monsters!

When they are finished, I'd like to take a look under the hood, if that could be a possibility  aa

I'll post pictures of the insides too. They are as much a work of art inside as outside.

I'd love to compare these to my Joule Electra VZN100 Monos.

Wow.....I am just awe struck....those are just gorgeous.  With the chrome and the high gloss paint it is like I am looking at an old muscle car or Harley.  Can't wait to see them finished and the different colours.

Thanks,
Mike

Hello all, for anyone interested here is a description of the technical side of these massive amps.
I'll start with the chassis, it is made entirely of 1/2" aluminum and 1/2" tool plate for the top and bottom. All aluminum is 6061-T6. Everything was done using a Bridgeport manual mill, as these plates are too large for the average sized CNC machine. All machine work was done by myself with the exception of the "W"'s.
Those were cut with water jet. The finish as you can see is either chrome or blue metallic powder coat base coat covered with a high gloss powder coat. It is very blue and shiny! It has so much silver flake in it that in really bright light they tend to look silver, very cooool! :thumb: The inside of the amps look exactly like the outside! All of the transformr and capacitor cans are deep drawn aluminum and have no seams, very costly but worth every penny. Cost was not in the picture on these amps. Top notch parts thruout.
Now, the reason they are so large. Danny wanted them to be extremely powerful, have huge amounts of headroom, and he wanted this to be acomplished with a very wide bandwidth and at power!!
I put many hours of thought into this project and this is what I have achieved.
I'll start off with the topology. The amps are parallel push-pull UL operation class a/b. Each channel uses a matched sextet of KT-88's and 3 GE7044's. The amps have only 3 caps in the entire audio path and they are all Sonicap Platinums :thumb: The output stage is direct coupled NO CAPS! All resistors are either PRP or KIWAME for the higher wattage units.
This is what I measured on the original prototypes:
280 watts continuous into either 4 or 8 ohms  :green:
I measured the bandwidth at full power(280 watts) and this is what I got:
4hz- 70khz!!!!  :thumb: and the thd at this level was <2%!!!!
I measured this several times because I did not believe it myself!
I designed the output transformer for these amps as I do for all my stuff, well it is a monster
Weighing in at 60 pounds in the raw!! aa The reason for the wide bandwidth. These weigh more than alot of amps.
The bias is user adjustable and is indicated by the use of 2 large meters that read all of the time.
With the bias current I selcted to use with these amps They will output approximately 110 watts in class A. The tubes will last around 3 years depending on the amount of use.
It takes a massive power supply to get all of this going.
I started with a 40 pound power transformer that supplies all of the voltages needed except the filaments, those are separate transformers, 3 of them. The frontend and bias supplies are pretty straight forward, all 3 supplies are pi filtered and have huge amounts of capacitance and each cap is bypassed with a Sonicap.
The main B+ supply is the beast. It is a dual pi filtered supply. I designed some 2hy 1 amp chokes that have a dcr of 5 ohms. Each supply uses 2 of these. the rectifiers are ultrafast soft recovery types. The capacitor banks consist of 6- 2700uf@450 volt cans, each one of these is bypassed with a Solen metalized poly 47uf@630volt cap and these were each bypassed with a Sonicap Platinum 1 uf@600volt. Very expensive caps! :thumb:
The main B+ runs at 650 volts and can output 1 amp easily! The cap banks have 915 joules of energy storage@ 650 volts!!!! Very Very dangerous! Headroom, I think so!
Thats about it. I'm sure Danny will post more pics as I get them to him. I'm hoping to be finished at the end of this week and I'll start to test them. By the time I'm finished I will have around 5-600 hours of time in them from idea to finished. I just wish I didn't have to be building them on my living room floor because they are huge and man are they heavy. Around 260- 275 when fully finished each amp! Enjoy
Gary

I can't even imagine what it will take to ship those....

They are definitely works of art, however - nice work, Gary!

Danny, what the heck are you planning on driving with those?  All of your recent speakers have been 90+ dB/w/m efficient - and line arrays to boot!  I think 110 W of pure class A power and 280 W total might be a weeeeeeeee bit of overkill for such speakers!

Danny, you should consider getting a grant from the city of Iowa Park as a backup power supply for the whole town....

No, knowing the city of Iowa Park, they are more likely to have be take out a permit to bring them into my house.

Hugh, the dodd 120's will sound better than your Joules, YMMV, but, I kept the 120's, and sold my 160's :duh:
