Which one??
« on: 29 Apr 2007, 02:33 am »
There are alot of Odyssey fans here, but I have a question.

Which one of these preamps do you think would match best with a Stratos amp? Does anyone have either one of these paired to a Stratos?

1. Candela (Odyssey)
2. Anthem Tlp-1

(For music listening in 2 channel)

My system-
Marantz DV-8400
Odyssey Stratos
Snell E-5 floorstanders or
Wilson Duette's

Thanks

I have never heard either preamp, but logic dictates that the Candela would be the ideal match for another Odyseey component.  If the Candela is half as good as my Mono Extremes you will have a winner.
The truth about Klaus is that whatever he has told me has been the truth.  His products are first rate and in today's world of gear cosing in the ten's of thousands, true bargains.

I was underwhelmed by another Anthem product, and overwhelmed by another Odyssey product, for what that's worth.

Hey Max

Which Anthem? and which Odyssey?
If you don't mind me asking

Cacophonix

What makes the Candela that good?

Spirit

I read some of your comments. Is Klaus really an upstanding guy? Everybody seems to like him, although I know he had some problems with his Tempest preamp.

I have owned eight preamplifiers over the past three years including the SS Anthem TLP 1 which i bought and then promptly returned to the dealer and the Anthem Pre1 L tube pre which was my very first tube preamplifier and then the Balanced Audio Technology VK 3i tube preamplifier which was my absolute favorite until i tried the Candela.i have found the Candela to be by far the most enjoyable preamplifier that i have ever had in my system :thumb: i am sticking with the Candela  8) thanks....WCW III

Hey Geo:
Simple answer: great guy.
If you check the Odyseey forum archives you will be very hard pressed to find a negative word said about Klaus.
I don't knowe anything about problems with the Tempest, but I believe that Klaus would not have hesitated to correct any problem.
I spent some time with him at the 2006 RMAF and I can tell you that his room, for the money, was untouchable.
He personally answers the phone when you call him.  My Extreme Monos are wonderful. What more can I say!!

of the five SS preamplifiers that i have had in my two channel rig during the past three years the Tempest sounded the best. the problems with the Tempest were isolated and most folks i know who have owned or still do own the Tempest have had zero problems with them. Klaus is as upstanding as they come :thumb:

Guys like Klaus, Jim Salk, Frank VanAlstine, etc. will do whatever is necessary to make their customers happy - and then some.  Klaus is the last guy in the world I'd have any hesitation to buy from.

As was stated above, $ for $, the Odyssey room is really tough to beat.  That system of the Loreleis, the Candella, and the Mono's would be a good value at close to twice the price.  For what he's selling the Candella for, it's a steal IMO.

The Anthem Integrated 2 (the 100w Jolida hybrid was absolutely identical in my system for 1/2 the retail) and the Stratos.

the tempest issues were not a big deal-very few had any issues-some had a hum that he tried to fix by swapping other transformers or something-

what shows the type of guy he is -go back and look up the ODL threads at harmonic discord if its still around-that will show you the type of man klaus is :thumb:

Thanks for the replies. I get the feeling Klaus is a "good fella" who does right by his customers. Not to mention co-modifying some great gear. Guess I will stand in line for the Candela. I really do love my Stratos. I've had a boatload of receivers, Parasound amps and some old SAE stuff (501 amp), but the Stratos shines very brightly.

Thanks again

Well I owned the TLP-1 just prior to getting my Tempest. I must say hands down the Tempest blew it away. No contest!!!

Back when I was searching. I went to an Anthem dealer, because I was really wanted a pre that included a tuner like the TLP does. He had lots of good things to say about the unit and I was really looking forward to getting it. Once I matched it with the rest of my Odyssey gear, I could'nt help but think something was lacking. There was no emotion. I really wanted to to work, but it still left me wanting. When I added the Tempest to my system, I was complete. In actuallity I think it made the single most noticable difference to my system than any other change I've made. I'm still impressed with it and I'm completely surprised that it's fallen off the radar since its sister(Candella) was born. You can find a really great deals on used Tempests now. I would'nt wait for a new Candella. Find a used Tempest. You won't be disappointed.

note: I'm not selling a Tempest nor am I affiliated with anybody selling one. However, if you're interested in a Stratos Extrexme I have one for sale. :green:

Now I've never heard a solid state Anthem preamp, so I can't comment on it. But do know the tubed Anthem preamp as well as the Sonic Frontiers (close cousin). The Tubed Anthem is a nice preamp, but not on the same level with the S.F. The Candela has a little different sonic signature than the S.F., but is at least on par with it. If your short on cash, you might take a good look at the Quicksilver or one of the Conrad Johnsons. I've used both in front of my mono blocs with good results. Still down a rung or two from the Candela (will admit that I didn't use one of the Premire series in the C.J.). I'd for sure be looking at a tubed preamp, as it will do wonders for those solid state amps. And with that the Candela is the bargin by a long shot. It's so good that if they ever decide to build one with a tape loop and six inputs, I'll be forced to order a second one (I absolutly have to have the tape loop for personal reasons).
When you get a Candela you will start to find weak spots in your system that you never knew existed (mine was in the phono stage and cables). It's a very dynamic preamp that's capable of driving amps and speakers to their limits. It seems that every week I find new things that I never knew were there in the past. None of these "weak spots" showed themselves till I moved up the ladder. Lastly I switched out the OEM power cord for a Stealth that had been lying around for a couples years. Seemed to be slightly smoother, and maybe even a touch more open in the mids and highs. So with that be sure to have Klaus build you a Gronenburg power cord along with interconnects. These two items alone made the brass actually sound "metalic", with that all important shimmer. Might add here that I still use the OEM tubes in mine.

that's exactly what I thought about the Anthem preamp. Kinda like a limp rag.

Not only have I herd the Candela with the Strato's , but I have herd the Candela with a Stratos with the Epiphony 2's right here in the shop. I have to say that it was and is a beautiful sound and perfect balance of all the dynamic ranges with a warm, clean, clear, crisp sound that is not over-powering.
