Need a media rack!
« on: 4 Aug 2003, 02:03 am »
Hey I'm moving tomorrow and I realized that I am going to need a rack of some sort to hold all of my movies and CDs.  Up until today I had stored them in my entertainment centre as it had a bunch of shelves and drawers for such things.  However I am donating it to the condo so it will be out in the family room and I don't really want my stuff out there.  My new closet is quite large (well a lot larger than I'm used to  ) so I will have some room for a rack in there.  I'm curious as to what you guys use.  I have about 70 movies and 100 CDs and its always expanding.  Skinny ones are a plus and so are inexpensive but well made ones.  Style will have to take a backseat for cost sadly.  While it will be more difficult logistically to do something DIY, it is an option.

You ever look at Boltz stuff?

I need to get a MM252x2 from them as I'm more than out of shelf space and would like to switch over to their shelving as it's expandable.

I have two of the Boltz racks and really like them. Most of the space they use is vertical and I think they look nice as well. As a bonus, few things short of a nuclear blast could damage them.

Occasionally they offer specials on units that have slight damage. I purchased my CD-600 this way and had to straighten out one of the side panels slightly but it was $50 cheaper and looks great now. That reminds me, I need to order another of the MM-252, almost out of storage for the DVD's.

Actually Boltz is about the only thing I have looked at

I agree that stuff looks good but it might be out of my price range... don't know I have some finances that I have too look at.  Also space is at a premium.  But on the brightside I found out that one of my roommates has small collection of DVDs (50 or so) which means that there are some movies that I thought about buying but don't have to for atleast a year.

I ended up with one of these.  They are sold all over the net for under $200 shipped.  Cheaply made, but functional -- they work and look OK.  Not great furniture, but they blend in pretty well.  Just do a google search on CD cabinets and you will find many places that sell them.  Assembly required, but if I can do it...

Check out this on Audio Advisor.  Great rack- I just picked one up in maple- very nicely made and beautifully finished rack.  A steal at 50% off.

Well, you could always get an MM-160 for $139 and add on to it later as the $ allows. As the MM-160 will hold 160 DVD's, I'm sure it'll hold all 100 of your CD's & all 70 of your DVD's with room to spare.

Space is at a premium huh? I've got a bit of that problem at my place as well. Ask Woodsea about how little space I've got over here. I'm sure he thought my place was a little cramped when he stopped by. It'd probably help a bit spacewise if I didn't have 900 or so movies...

I have a Boltz CD-600 and a tall CD expansion kit for a cool 1200 CD storage unit. It looks nice enough, and I know that I can add on to it later.

One consideration is that you've got to load the shelves up pretty full or you risk CDs flopping over on their sides and falling through the metal bars that hold them up all the way down to the floor. But, there are brackets on each shelf that you can cram up against the shelves CDs, and once it's loaded up they aren't going anywhere.

I think I may get the MM-252 as I am sure that I will fill up the space soon enough.  In addition to that the taller ones will fill up less floor space.  Also I didn't realize that they are $249 assembled and shipped.  If they wern't paying for shipping that would be rather costly as they way close to 40 lb and are rather large for shipping.  Now for the color... I am either going to go with a clear coat or the metallic paint.  Black doesn't go with the decor.  Anyone have pics of either the clear or the metallic paint scheme?

If you have some tools, building a rack can be a nice option.  I built a really nice oak rack w/hardwood dowels for my DVDs:  it will hold about 550 DVDs.  If I'd have configured it for CDs I think it'd hold about 950 to 1000.  The whole deal cost me about $110, but then I already had a drill press and a few other tools.

It is about 6 feet tall with oak 1 X 6 sides and a 1 X 6 in the center (3 posts).  The hardwood rods are spaced into eight rows, and they go thru the middle post for support and are glued into countersunk holes in the side panels.  I then drove really cool looking square headed screws into 2 of the three shelf rods.  In a way it does look like a wooden version of the way the Boltz racks work.

My brother has a digital camera; maybe I can borrow it and try to figure out how to upload a picture.  It'd be a little easier to see what I mean.  Anyway, nice looking, very cheap (compared to Boltz, anyway), and you of course can build it just the exact size and configuration for your needs.
