Ref 9 V2 with soobwoofer hi-level connection
« on: 28 Apr 2007, 12:09 am »
This is my first post, so hi to everybody.
I was extremely interested in the 9SE, but now that I have heard about the V2 I am waiting to know more about it, also considering that I am in the UK and don't know when the new model will arrive.
I am concerned about one topic though: I have read in the manual of the 9SE that is not allowed to connect the monoblocks to the speakers if the are connected to a subwoofer in hi-level (with a speaker cable directly connecting the binding posts to the subwoofer).
This is quite annoying as I have a SVS PC+ sub and the only way to connect it in order to use it at the same time for music and home theatre is in the via the hi-level connections for stereo and low-level for movies.
The rest of my sistem is:
Resolution Audio Opus 21>Unison Research Unico amp>Gallo Ref 3 II

Has anybody had tried this sort of connection and will the new ref 2 have the same sort of connection. Or maybe I have misunderstood the manual? Many thanks

We recommended that sub's high level can not be connected in general due to the half rail DC offset of our amp's speaker terminal versus ground. A lot of other switching amps also has similar issue.  To really confirm whether the subwoofer can handle DC offset, you should check with the manufacturer (ask if you can connect a switching amp with half-rail DC on the speaker terminal offset to your sub)

You can also connect our P-8 or P-9 second output to the sub's line in.

I personally don't use the sub when listening to 2 channel. Nuforce amp has very deep bass and will push the low freq of your speaker as much as it can handle.  Oh well, I use S-9 at home and it goes down to 39Hz and that's enough for 2 channel. I use REL Storm III as HT sub.

The other way is to get an additional sub.  Subs work better in stereo anyway.

I would suggest one more way, get the really inexpensive Behringer DCX2496 (under $300) which allows managing the LFE (for movie) and Stereo playback properly through line-level signal, as well as very flexible adjustments.

Many thanks for the replies.
Well, I believe I will use my SVS in low level connection only from now on.
Further on I will probably get the Antony Gallo SA bass amplifier; it should not interfere with the monoblocs as it connects on the second set of binding posts of the speakers. Can you please confirm me? Also if someone has tried this set up I would appreciate your comments

A separate sub amp (connected to preamp) would definitely not interfere with Nuforce monoblocks.
