Yamamoto Sound Craft gear
« on: 27 Apr 2007, 04:54 pm »
If you've read my articles in TONEAudio, you'll know how much I love my Yamamoto Sound Craft gear (see issue #7 of TONEAudio for reviews and photos).  I've had the A-08S 45 power amplifier, CA-03L preamplifier (with phono stage) and SUT-3 step-up transformers for just a little over a year now, and they all sound incredible and have definitely shown me what is possible in the realm of SET amplification.

Well, Jeff Dorgay, publisher of TONE, presented me with a deal yesterday that may be too hard to pass up.  He wants to sell me a piece of equipment that is probably one of the top three in the world in its category.  Normally, I wouldn't ever be able to afford it, but now I can just about do it...but the only way is to try to sell my Yamamoto gear.

So here is the deal...the A-08S normally sells for $2650, the CA-03L sells for $4150, and the SUT-3 step-ups sell for $1000.  That's $7800.  Plus I'll throw in an extra set (4) of the preamp tubes, the rare Telefunken 6AK5Ws.  The A-08S come with an RCA 80 rectifier tube and two 717A mushroom tubes.  I have a pair of NOS RCA/Cunningham 45s on the way, plus one EML 45 still left.  Plus, the preamp comes with an MM/MC phono stage built in that sells for $2950 on its own.  (The line stage sells for $2150 alone, so you save about $1000 there, too!)

I'll let all of this go for $5000, plus shipping.  Of course I have all of the original packing boxes and owner's manuals.  I'm probably not going to be too receptive to haggling, since I don't NEED to do this.  If I don't get $5000, I probably won't be able to swing the other deal, so it won't matter...I'll keep the Yamamoto gear and continue to live happily with it.  But if you're familiar with this equipment, you know how stunning it is...both in the way it looks and the way that it sounds.  The Yamamoto A-08S is probably the most beautiful amplifier on the planet.  So this is a great way to save about $3000!

Again, check out issue #7 of TONEAudio for pics of the actual units for sale.  Everything is still in close to mint condition, and looks no different than the day I bought it.  Thanks, everyone!

Anybody out there that can live with 2 watts, I'll attest to the Utterly Superior sound of the A-08s.  I own it and wouldn't part with it.  I had mine up for sale a while back, got cold feet, and pulled the sale.  That decision will likely go down as one of the best I've made in my audio life.

It is as visually stunning as it is sonically.  Somebody NEEDS this amp.  I'm sure the other stuff is as unbelievably underpriced and amazing as the amp.

If you're wondering how to make due with 2 watts, get some Harrison Fmod high-pass filters and take the bass duties away.  I have the Yammie running 70 hz and up and it will Throw Down Metallica Loud.

This is a great deal.

Thanks!  I have to admit that I'm doing this VERY RELUCTANTLY.  I may get cold feet as well.

I use Zu Audio Druid mk. IVs, which are 101 dB sensitive.  Anyone who owns Zu speakers should seriously consider the A-08S amp...Sean Casey, who is the founder of Zu, told me that it's his favorite amp to use with Zus.

I'm using mine with the Def. Pro's - it's a stunning combination indeed.

One needs to ask...what could possibly replace that gear?

Would you sell the amp only?

Yes...for $2000 plus shipping, which includes the two RCA/Cunningham 45s and one EML 45.

Other than Yamamoto peamp, which type of line stage preamp would have synergy with this amp?

Well, I would tend to stay with a tubed preamp, if at all possible.  I've only used the A-08S with the CA-03L preamp, but I've heard it with preamps from Melody and NAT as well, and it sounded just as nice.

The A-08S amplifier has been sold!

I am still selling the CA-03L preamplifier with phono stage and the SUT-3 step-up transformers.  The CA-03L retails for $4150 and the SUT-3 sell for $1000.  I'll sell them together for $2500.

I had a couple korneff SET45s and they were great amps, but still had a tough time swinging down low.

Can miklor or othrs link me to a good discussion on using external high pass filters?  I wouldnt mind re-visiting low power if i can have some workhorse moving my woofers.

thanks.  dont mean to thread-crap... i think this is a great offering on the seller's part and not only is it a rare chance for someone to get some great gear but a chance for people to become introduced to the psychedellic sound of the 45. rock on.

I'm interested in the line stage but don't really need the stepup transformer since my cartridge has a reasonably high output.  Would you be willing to sell them separately?
