I apologize in advance if this news has been posted already, but it is news worth repeating. Ornette Coleman won the Pulitzer for his music this week in a surprising way.

Yeah, I read that... he deserves it. Hats off to him.

The great thing is that he wasn't even nominated, yet the panelists took it upon themselves to bypass the nominees and select him anyway. It's good to see they were willing to go outside the box to reward someone who is truly deserving.

As a person who likes some "wimpy" jazz (i.e., with melodies and not too spontaneous), would I like this CD?  I'm thinking of purchasing it, as I heard the NPR story and liked the part of the CD I heard, but I'm afraid it might be too spontaneous for me.

Bob: I just can't see you as an Ornette Coleman fan, but I've been wrong before.

Thanks, Dan.  I might pick it up anyway, if only to add to my "party jazz" collection, which I use when I have people over.  Also, even if I can't stomach the whole CD in one sitting, perhaps song-by-song, it's not bad.

Ornette has mellowed some since the wild and crazy days... he sounds almost melodic in his elder age. Go for it, you may like it.
