Tubed-rectified 9.0SE++ rocks
« on: 15 Apr 2007, 12:12 am »
I just got my pre back from Dan.

IMG, what an improvement over "stock"! More detail, freq extension, and pace...and lower noise floor. Since my loaner amp from Jeff at Audible Arts was a stock 9SE, I was able to A-B the two on the same day.

You might ask -- what's the "++"? This is my made-up shorthand for Jeff's new cap's and a full complement of NOS tubes. So I'm a bit unsure as to what tube-rectifying does on its own....

Recommended.   :thumb:

Good listening,

Bob

My system: Modwright/Denon CD/DVD, 9.0SE++, ASL SET mono's, VS 4JR's

What are the new caps?  I sent mine back in to have it updated, but I didn't get the tube rectifier upgrade.  Mine sounds better with the updated power supply and other tweeks, but I didn't get any upgraded caps.  How significant was the upgrade on the highs.  I think the stock sounds not extended enough for me.  In the are?  I live in Delaware and would love to compare the stock to modified.  Thanks, Jeff

What are the new caps?

Dan has a supply of caps that he had made to his specs. They have a 'Modwright' logo on them.

Yes, I believe that they extend the freq spectrum, but I can't swear to it since several other upgrades were made to my system concurrently.

Perhaps someone else can comment?

Bob

We did design our own custom capacitors that are used in the LS 36.5 as well as our phono stages.  I had been using the Sonicap capacitors and they are excellent, but I wanted the very best that we could get and ultimately settled on designing our own.  I chose oil-impregnated poly as the dialectric type for the larger values - 1.0uf and larger - and pure teflon film and copper foil for the smaller value signal path capacitors.  They are quite simply better than ANY capacitors available on the market and the improvement is evident in our new MWI products.

We are also considering offering a full MWI cap upgrade for the 9.0SE preamp for $500.  Please reply if interested.  This will be available as an upgrade through all MWI dealers.

I cannot say that the new capacitors necessarily increase the frequency response of the 9.0SE, as it is already very good, but the tonality and sonic neutrality of the new capacitors is where the benefit lies.

We are redesigning our website and when this is done, we will be adding a page for the MWI caps, with pricing, etc. for DIY use.  We do have them available right now in the following values:

4.7uf-400V Metalized oil-impregnated poly.
1.0uf-400V Metalized oil-impregnated poly.
.1uf-400V Metalized oil-impregnated poly.

.22uf-400 Teflon film/foil.
.1uf-400V Teflon film/foil.
.01uf-400V Teflon film/foil.

Please email for pricing.  OEM inquiries welcome.

Thanks,

Dan W.

Sorry Danny, I have been SO slammed trying to fill backorders currently.  I will call you soon.  I would love to have you use our caps in your speaker kits.  I believe you would be VERY pleased with the metallized oil-impregnated poly caps for larger values and our premium teflon films in the smaller values.  These are quite simply the best caps that I have used to date...okay, so I am biased as we did design them to our specs ;), but they are exceptional.

Thanks,

Dan

I am still interested in those caps if you are interested in selling them.

I'll buy a pair of .1uF values of each of them just to sample them.

Sorry Danny ;).  I got ambushed by the NYC show and a nasty cold to follow.  While we have not made phone contact, I would be happy to sell you a pair of each .1uf/400V, TEF and OIMP types.  I now have .22uf/400V TEF also.

Thanks,

Dan W.

Will do bro'.  Sorry for being so hard to get ahold of.  I have been so busy lately that I can't often reach my OWN self ;).

Take care,

Dan

Hey Dan, Never mind. After not hearing back from you after leaving several messages for you I take it that you must not have wanted to send me any caps, so at this point, don't. I am no longer interested.

Why are we seeing the private discussions about one-on-one transactions in this mfg forum?  No offense, but why does anyone assume we care?  I thought that was what the PM function was for.

Danny,

Your personal comments directed toward Dan are out of place in an open forum, especially in the manufacturers circle.

If you have a problem with Dan you really should deal with it privately and not air it in public.

I can't imagine you would want your customers to do the same to you.

I think you guys are reading a little too much into this. Dan is a great guy. I like Dan a lot. But after three months of trying to get some caps, he never returned my calls, and the only response I ever got was here in this forum. So I can only conclude that he was not interested in sending me caps, and at this point I am just not that interested any more. That is all there is to it.
