Yup, my mistake.

I still like the Neil Diamond version better though.

Hmm, I'm not quite sure what I could tell you what a 'perfect' song is, but I'll throw some out that seem to simply have a 'rightness' to them in terms of what they are.

Leonard Cohen - Take This Longing
Dylan - Don't Think Twice (It's Alright)
Tragically Hip - Another Midnight (and maybe New Orleans is Sinking)
REM - You Are the Everything
REM - It's The End of The World As We Know It
Springsteen - Thunder Road
The Ditty Bops - Oooh La La
Greg Brown - 'Cept You and Me Babe

"Without You".....Harry Nilsson

I've been amazed by that tune and Harry's skill.  Until recently, I had no idea it was written by Pete Ham and Tom Evans of Badfinger.  Their version further validates Nilsson's extraordinary ability.

I won't repeat, as there are some real gems mentioned, of course.  I'll add:
Paranoid Android             Radiohead
There There                   Radiohead
Hey Bulldog                   The Beatles
Senses Working Overtime      XTC
Get Back In Line              The Kinks

Fun thread...thx

What makes you say that?  I never heard that one. Or if I have I don't recognize it by name.

Of course there's no such thing as a "perfect" song, but I was always enamoured of Jim's song writing ability.  It has a great, flowing two-part chorus, narrative verses and a bittersweet sentiment.  That and it was a song I happened to think of at the time.  I'd guess that some rules would be in order for us to truly whittle down what makes a perfect song.  For me, any song that fades out would be disqualified.  If I were king of the universe I would outlaw songs that fade out at the end.

Why?  One might think if it were truly the perfect song, that it might go on forever.
