Maybe it's just me, but grill cloth seems like the easiest and most proven method.

I can't relate about the the b200's being relieved of bass. My current set-up has them running full-range and the subs only come in  for the foundation. Mind you the tweeters and x-overs are a whole other story.
I've got the subs set @ about 45 hz and even without them it sounds solid.

As for the .68mH + 6.8  vs. the 1mH + 10, I'm only going by the published figures of the driver.

Accourding to my spice software the graph for .68 + 6.8 shows...

-.25 db @100hz
-.5 @ 200
-.75 @ 300
- 1.25 @ 400
- 1.5 @ 500
-1.9 @ 600
- 2.1 @ 700
-2.6 @ 800
- 3.1 @ 900
- 3.4 @ 1k
- 3.8 @ 2k
-4.8 @ 3k
- 6 @ 10k

The 1mH + 10 ohm simulates as follows

- .2db @ 100hz
-  .7 @ 200
- 1 @ 300
- 1.7 @ 400
- 2.6 @ 500
- 3 @ 600
- 3.4 @ 700
- 3.6 @ 800
- 4 @ 900
- 4.5 @ 1k
 - 7.9 @10k
I think that the .68 and 6.8 allows for a little more coherent midrange. But that's judging with my ears.
These values are approximate, but I feel that they are close.

Bevan,

In the MOX-thread: http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=31582.90 there is a very accurate simulation I did on page 10.
This simu is based on the actual impedance of B200 at the different frequencies as well as comparing to an accurate estimation (the most recent published)
in the German Hobby HiFi magazine. This should give a good perspective. The going 'truth' in Germany is that the B200 should be accompanied by 1 mH + 10-15 ohms for best results.

Maybe I just haven't followed this (and related) B200 threads closely, but as I read it you guys are leaning more and more towards the setup that is recommended by the Visaton themselves, in their NoBox kit: 1.5 mH + 10 Ohm cascaded after a 2nd order high-pass @ 250 Hz.

What puzzles me is that here I read very good things about this setup (phase plugs or not) but OTOH Dick Olsher pretty much trashed B200 it in its review. And the freq. plot  three does seem to support his findings.

So, question is: Anyone tried the B200 (with or without correction circuit) in a NoBox-alike setup ?i.e. B200 run FR + bass below ?

TIA,

Florian

P.S. Another reason  I am asking is that I'm hesitating btw. getting the whole NoBox kit from Visaton (eventually adding the phase plugs on the B200) vs using the Feastrex D5nf + Augie version (mo moolah), both either in a biamping setup or not (depending how it turns out).

I have been running the b200 full range, with 12 inch sub below it, for over a year now.

I have flirted with the correction circuit, but have yet to install it permanently.

I recently added the phase plugs, and for seated, stereo listening, doubt I will pursue a tweeter - can likely bring improvements, but at the moment I am unmotivated!

I have used 1.5mh and 5 ohm & 10 ohm circuits.  I found them to cut too hard into the midbass and treble.   I ended up using the B200 full range  with a Madison Warrior 15 crossed at 200hz. It was a fun arrangement for my living room 14' x 24', but overwhelming in my 12' x 13' current room.  I also wasn't happy with the 200hz roll off.  I think it was too high.

I will say that my simus are a bit more accurate than yours Mark, in that they care for the rising impedance of the B200. However this should not
be argued in absurdum, because, for instance, for upper Bass and lower Midrange Baffle size, shape and element placement affect response quite substantially.
Therefore most our observations will be subjective to some extent and quite dependent on our setup.

Agreed that 1.5 mH is a too high value for the inductor. But considering the success of this simple LR-circuit since I first reported on it in the Gravity-thread in September last year, one has to be more than satisfied with the soundimprovement people has experienced with it. :D

i've been using b200 in large baffle recently hinged, in a room 13'x13'. i recently added the .68mH and 6.8ohm circuit. I have to say that in my room before this circuit my b200's were pretty much unlistenable to, due to the high end harshness. the bsc has transformed them, and they now sound good. there is still some upper range harshness, so i will try the 1mH and 10ohm option when i get the time. the phase plugs seem to be the next big thing, along with the Hawthorn's ( :o.

Erling,
As I stated, I am only going with the published specs. of .5 mH , and that is likely @ 1k although I can't find documentation saying so.
Without a zobel on the b200, the rising impedance definitely changes everything. My previous post compared apples to apples -  There is a zobel in the circuit in both applications.
I use a zobel on mine. Without one your back up to -.75 db @ 10khz.

Gilbodavid,
Try adding a zobel to the b200 After the L+R circuit. It will keep the rising response down; without one the response starts to rise again after about 3k.
I use a 10u capacitor and a 6.2 ohm resistor. Thanks to Scorpion, I cut the value of the capacitor in half and it works better. I know Scorpion stated the value of his zobel previously, but I can't remember it off hand.

phase plugs in place, and i'm very happy. way wider sweet spot, and what feels like more extension and detail.

installation took about 10 minutes. Drivers stayed in their baffles. cutting was not quite as expected, i cut the dome as instructed until about one mm from the dark black circle which I'm guessing is the glue. I managed to take a sliver or two of the orange plastic stuff that lines the hole. I was unsure if this was maybe the glue so read the planet 10 instructions and was alarmed to read about the possibility of cutting wires if one cut to far. But doesnt sound like any damage was done, on the contrary. would advise anyone to cut with the blade at a 45 degree angle, the tip of the blade angled towards the centre. seems no need to trim away too much as there is a good millimeter of free play after the initial rough cut. dont know if leaving a bit of the glue or dome behind will affect the sound?

anyone thinking about doing the op, do it do it do it...
