Kenny Garrett

I got to hear Kenny Garrett live for the first time last Saturday night. Some of you may remember him as a sideman with Mile Davis. He has an excellent band with him and if he's coming to your area I recommend a listen.

Saw him a couple years ago, he had this young drummer at that time who reminded me of Tony Williams, could not have been more than 19 or 20 years old... was a dynamite show, free at one of the concert sponsored by J&R here in NYC

I've heard him a few times: once at Sweet Basil in 1998, once a little before that at the Detroit Jazz Festival, and I think I caught him one other time in NYC - maybe at Sweet Basil again, a couple of years later.  I honestly think this guy has the #1 live show I'd like to hear today.  He's so powerful: manages to play the alto with the weight of a tenor.

DB - was Pharaoh Saunders playing with him?  His last album, "Beyond the Wall", was recorded with Pharaoh on tenor, Brian Blade on drums (he's been playing with Kenny Garrett for a while now, so I wonder whether he's the drummer mentioned by mjosef?), Robert Hurst III on bass and Mulgrew Miller on piano.  Also has some efforts from Bobby Hutcherson on vibes.  I wonder if it's the same touring band?

If you want to hear him, he'll be touring various parts of Europe for most of the next few months.  But he'll be in Newark, NJ on April 28, and at Iridium in NYC from May 2-6.  And excitingly for me, he's due to play the Detroit Jazz festival again on September 1!

It was definitely not the same band on tour, and none of the names of the band members I recognized, but these guys were damn good players, and deserve more recognition than they are presently receiving.
If I get some time today I will try and get the names of the personnel at the performance.

I have seen/heard Brian Blade with Wayne Shorter and Herbie... I think the drummer I was thinking of is Chris Dave. Not a well known name, but has great technique and timing.
