What do people do with unwanted CD's??

I got a Joshua Kadison CD recently that's too bland for my tastes, so I tried to donate it to the public library but they seemed relatively disinterested (despite the fact that they have a paltry CD collection).
The CD already went through the used CD store (where I finally bought it for $.50 or less) so it has nil resale value but there should be someone out there who'd enjoy listening to it.

Does anyone have ideas??

Once a CD has been offered for free to friends and family, it goes to a special 'unwanted' box. This box grows over time and I can either A: put it up for sale on ebay or B: take it to the flea market/boot sale/ garage sale and sell the whole box for $5.

Another option is to give it to the thrift store. Get a receipt, write it off.

Yep, any CDs that can't be traded back in to a CD store, I'll do the following:

See if it has any value to anyone by looking for it on eBay. You never know what people will buy on eBay!

Just like Tonto said, I'll save a bunch and donate them to Goodwill and take a right-off. I get rid a tons of stuff at Goodwill. Good riddance, and perhaps someone else will get some use of my crap.

Toss the CD and save the jewel case. It's handy to have spares!

Buy a 12-guage shotgun and take up the sports of trap & skeet. My experimental Patricia Barber CD met this fate.

Someone would have loved to have had that Barber CD, even if they paid 1/2 price for it at the used CD store. Or, if the library would accept unwanted CD's, you could have borrowed it, decided Patricia Barber wasn't your cup of tea and saved whatever you paid for it.

Ages ago I used to sell unwanted CDs at a shop which has since closed.

Ahh, those were the days. You could even listen to stuff before you bought it on some crusty headphones. I discovered a ton of stuff that way.

Nowadays I've sold a few on eBay but it is almost more trouble than its worth and I don't think I even made much money on them. In fact I donated most of the profits I made to the RIAA because I heard they were hurting, and if there's anything I hate to see it's a record executive who has to sell one of his Lexus' just to make ends meet.

I must admit though, that Black Cat's method sounds very interesting!

a friend of mine strings a few of them down on his fruit trees. he says that they scare off birds... i don't think that the evercoveted black CD-R's will work for this one though

Oh I know I could have given away the Patricia Barber CD, or could have sold it, but I could not, due to ethical reasons. I feel that the particular CD (called Verse) was SO terrible it was best removed permanently from the face of the earth so no other human or animal could be subjected to what sounded like a recording of genitally leprous cats screwing. One and an eighth ounces of seven and a half shot put Patricia Barber where she belongs...dust. I should receive kudos for my good deed to humanity.

Actually, this was an extreme case, I give most of my unwanted CD's away to friends.

though I don't share your opinion of Patricia Barber, if there was some way of getting CD's back into circulation, people could sample them and decide cheaply (or for free) that they did or didn't like them. A public library would be a good central location (but as I said above, my local library was disinterested).

I have sold a few dozen CDs on half.com and it seems to work out well. I typically get more than local record stores or other re-resale websites offer. Sometimes not, but it is pretty easy to sell.

I have also sold books, VHS and DVDs. Got rid of a bunch of stuff just sitting around taking up space. -

If its that bad a CD, give it to the Army. I'm sure they could use it in their interrogations-like was done with Noriega (opera lover, was flushed out of his palace by 24 HR. bright lights and nonstop heavy metal).

Carlman's idea of a box of unwanted CD's reminded me of one audio forum's attempt to create a travelling box of CD's circulating amongst members--maybe 50 CD's a person could listen to. If he wanted to keep a CD, he had to replace it with one or two CD's from his own collection and send it to the next member.

This would work best with CD's like the Patricia Barber mentioned above (or the Norah Jones) that are actually good but may not appeal to everyone. The Joshua Kadison CD I initially mentioned isn't a bad CD, it's just not for me. If everyone just put crap in the box, it'd just be a waste of shipping $$.
