mounting a transformer
« on: 6 Apr 2007, 01:08 am »
Hi all,

Well I bought one of them Avel Lindberg transformers for my amp I am building. Now, Open up the box, and I see this big doughnut, with this little dish thing with two foam pads and a bolt and nut. Oh yeah, there is a second foam pad. I presume I put that one under the transformer. Has anybody come up with a better way of mounting this transformer. Was thinking of looking for a say wooden or plastic coaster and putting the transformer on it, along with the foam pad. What a cheesy setup. I somehow it didn't sink in that there would be that much play in the dish. I'm not interested in puckering up my case thank you.

There shouldn't be any play at all once installed. One sheet goes under the transformer, the other between the transformer top and the mounting disc, tighten the nut snugly but, not too tight.  If you want more vibration padding go to Lowe's and get some of the foam used for insulating steam pipes and chilled water lines, makes a great pad though it'll add an inch to your total height.

Hi Gordy,

The thing that concerns me is this little undersized dish. If this amp were shipped anywhere, the transformer would shift. So should probably look for something to fill up that 1.5 inch gap in the center.

Hi,

I'll look in to that padding. The disk, is where I'm concerned. There's an inch and a half in the middle of the transformer, and about 2 inches at the opening of the transformer. That disk is about an inch and a half at the bottom lying it flat on a table. So there's a good half inch play, and a lot of cintripacal force foing on if this amp were to be shipped. Any ideas, thanks for the help.
