Newbie to HT....who makes preamps?
« on: 4 Apr 2007, 04:01 pm »
I'm considering a multichannel HT set up. I've got enough power amps around so I don't think I need a receiver, but who makes mulitchannel pre amps? Only brand I know of is Outlaw.

Classe offers some nice units.

Krell, Meridian, Aragon, Levinson, many more.

I have an Arcam AVP700 and like it a lot.

There are usually a lot of decent Anthem units as well as Emotiva's available as resales.

As usual, the question of budget rears its ugly head. If you want to save money, don't rule out an inexpensive receiver. Yamaha and Denon (and others) make amazingly good ones for the buck. Buy a medium powered one with the features you want and use the pre-outs to drive your existing amps. You can even use the built in amps for the less critical effects channels. I found this to be an excellent solution for myself, being an audiophile who wants to preserve most of my cash for my main hobby while creating a home theater that I actually enjoy using.

I recommended a Panasonic XR57 receiver ($300) and Onix X-LS series 5.1 to a friend and he is thrilled with that setup.

Theta, Classe', Meridian if you want something that's actually relatively musical as a preamp.  If you want pure HT bang/boom and the ultimate in surround modes, Lexicon - but it's pretty sterile as a music preamp.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Tom, I'm putting the Onix speakers at the top of my list. My friend Nancy that you met at Rob's get together has the Ref1 and the SP3 integrated amp package. Nice little rig for the money. I'll look into that Panny too.

If I ever make it back to Ft. Wayne, I'd love to hear your rig. I've got std Odyssey Monos driving Merlin TSM-M. (which I hope to get updated to MM at some point) My amps are the ones on the Odyssey website. I took those pics, which is how I know Klaus. (and yes, I keep telling him we need to get updated pics of all the new stuff and update that website)

Yes, I remember you really liked the SP3 at the time.  It is a terrific bargain and entre to the high end sound.

You are welcome to stop by and listen any time you make it up this way.  At some point fairly soon (I hope) Klaus will be bringing my Mono's back from "tune up".  I also have the Onix Rocket 760/200/300 package in my HT with the Arcam gear.  There is a LOT going on with the X-Series right now.  They have a floor standing version of Zybar's X-LS for only about another $100 as well as an MTM and Omni version - all ala Danny Ritchie's handiwork.  They are in gorgeous finishes from the new plant in Cali Columbia as well.

Hey George, What kind of shelf is that that you have your center channel on?  How heavy is your center channel as well?  I have the B&W HTM7 which weighs 28lbs and was looking for a shelf that would support it.
