The most difficult of all audio related tasks.
« on: 2 Apr 2007, 02:36 am »
I have recently discovered the most difficult thing one can attempt related to this hobby. I used to think it was integrating a subwoofer to the mains without benefit from an equalizer. Getting dipole loudspeakers like Maggies properly positioned can be a chore, too. However, nothing anyone can think of will come close to the almost impossible task of LEVELING A PAIR OF #!%*!!! SPEAKER STANDS!!!
Maybe I'm an idiot (I like to think not) but that was perhaps one of the most difficult and aggravating things I've ever attempted.   :banghead: :cuss:  :banghead:
Anyone have some recommendations for a good quality 3 spike speaker stand I'm all ears.

That's the key, 3 spike! Is there a way you can remove the two front pikes and insert one in the middle converting them to a 3 point configuration? It would make your life a lot easier.

I just use a cheapo laser level since it's easier to see on a wall than a small bubble while working on the floor and leveling.

The stands are newly purchased Target stands and have a 30-day money back. I'm seriously thinking of sending them back for a refund as a quick websearch just now for three spike stands came up with Sound Anchors. For about $30.00 more than I paid for the Targets I can get a single post three spike stand.  :thumb:

I hate 4 point configurations on speakers and stands but for some reason, that's all I have

Here's my trick:

Level the first axis with two spikes on one side.  (I do this while holding up the other half of the stand to keep it from touching ground)

Then, level the second axis with the third spike.

Then, just put the fourth spike as far down as it'll go without lifting another spike.

Done.  Hopefully :green:

Of course, I have hardwood floors (rubber ends on the spikes), so it's easier than trying to drive a spike through a thick rug and pad.

I figured there must be a trick to making it easier. That's good to know and I should have been smart enough to have figured that out myself. :duh:

TomS which Laser Level are you using? There is a whole bunch of them on Amazon and I am a loss as to which to get. Other than leveling I also want to check confirm the tow-in and distances to walls.

I just went to Sears and bought a cheap $25 one.  You can get them at Lowes, Home Depot, etc.  As long as the top of the speaker is flat it's pretty easy.   I'll have to check the brand tonight, but it's probably a Craftsman.   I use it for all sorts of things.  Tom
