I cancelled my AudioGon ad offering the RM 40's for sale.
I had a kind of local guy want to come over and hear them.
I had my B&W 801's hooked up.
Realizing I would have to "WoW" him, I spent a great deal of time changing equipment around, moving and tuning the RM 40's, etc, etc.

I sat down and listened, and called him.
Told him he was welcome to come hear them, but I have decided to keep, and update them!

Even with a slight hole in the one passive radiator, they sound great.

I had just a WEE bit of upper mid harshness, and though I did not believe in it, just for kicks, I stuck a Cobra Cables Power Cord on my Pre Amp.

God, am I going nuts ?
The sound totally changed!

This allowed me to increase both the ribbons levels, and oh my!

The 40's are staying!

Wise decision not to sell the 40s. It's like you put it, "if it's not right, it's what feeding it. Mine have been steadily getting better for over five years and still  going.

If you decide not to update them, when I get around to putting in my CDWG and new passive radiators, I'll have two passive radiators with no home.  I can send them to you for free.

Thanks!
I just got back from my friend Mike's house, he also has RM 40's, and they sound great!

Actually, mine do too, but I do plan to update.
I WAS going to wait on Brian to see if he was gonna make a more efficient woofer for them, but no need now.

I had so much glare in my system, it forced me to run my woofers WAY down below 12 o'clock!

Not any more!

Mine will now play so loud w/o amp clipping it's almost scary.

I can see right now my path lies in better wires/interconnects/equipment.

Let us know how you like the upgrades ?

You know, it's almost like Deja Vu, my friend Mike almost sold his too, and is glad he didn't.

It took him about 4 years to get them where they are today.
Though I THOUGHT I was a "veteran audiophile", I can say the 40's have been a challenge to get right.

But I am well on my way now, and I plan to bi wire them today, and play with some interconnects.

Hi Chris,

Glad you went in this direction.  When I first saw your "for sale" post, I thought it might be a April Fools set up

And don't be so hard on yourself.  The RM40's are not really that hard to set up, you just were trying to set up an "injured" pair, and that can be trying, if not impossible.

I think (remember this is coming from a VMPS dealer) you need to sell all those other speakers, retire your present RM40s to "horizontal" surround duties, and get a new pair for the front.

Then you would have an "unmatchable" system.  I doubt any speaker made could match the surround qualities of the RM40 stand mounted horizontally at ear level.  (or with a CDWG) :thumb:

And the Power Cord "difference" is not uncommon.  I am not generally given to beleiving in too much "wire" voodoo, but I can still remember having some friends over and switching PC's and actually hearing a difference.

The detail, and sensitivity to the signal of the VMPS does allow you to hear things like that, that many other designs might "fog" out.

I was at my friend Mikes here locally for about an hour today.
Sat down and had a beer with my friend, and we listened to his RM 40's.
I still have a long way to go, but I am getting there.

I REALLY like the idea of the new RM 60's!
If there is ONE thing I would like in the RM 40's, and REMEMBER, mine are OLD 166hz possibly crossovers, it would be a fuller, warmer sound.

In the RM 60, Brian has the fill in drivers right ON the floor!
This assures that even well out in the room, the drivers are being boundary supported.

You know how it is John, some like Thiels, and some like Vandersteens ?

Theils have a lean tonal balance, and Vandersteens are warm and thick.

I just happen to like warm and thick as opposed to lean

Maybe I will sell off my B&W 801's, and a few other pairs of speakers, and get the RM 60's someday.

You are right about the ribbons!

I find them to be extremely revealing of anything in front of them.
