Used CD's Online?
« on: 30 Mar 2007, 08:07 pm »
Did some searching around to see if there were any topics about used cd's stores online, but didn't find a whole lot.  Oh a few mentions of SecondSpin.com and Half.com, but that's about it.  So where are the good used CD stores?  Anybody got any recommendations?  Who's got the best selection and only sends decent quality cd's?

Those two that you mentioned are the ones that I would use if I am in the market for used CDs online.  Can you find one   locally?  Normally big cities have many used cds.  Also around universities where they have lots of iPod users are another place to go.

There are a few local stores to me that sell used CD's.  The big problem with them is that it's usually more miss than hit as far as finding anything I'm specifically looking for -- especially when it's something less than mainstream which is a majority of what I listen to.  A large online store theoretically could do better since they have potential access to a much larger audience.

I like to use Half.com.  Works fine for me.  Just be sure to get someone with high feedback.

Concur with the half.com recommendation. But you might also look at yourmusic.com. The cds are new at $6.99 per. The problem with this site is the limited selection. I have purchased used cd and then checked yourmusic only to find I could've purchased new cheaper.

I've used yourmusic.com already here. :)  It's cheap when you find something you like.  Got a few things queued up!

Anybody got personal experience with lala and wanna share their comments?  I'm curious how good the quality is.

I use amazon for used cds and books regularly.  Haven't had a problem with them yet, and the selection is huge.

Papajin,

I've been trading on LaLa since last June and have found the service company itself to be very good and quick to responded to Q's and a problem or two, for instance recieving the wrong CD.  Since you're actually dealing with individual traders, the cd condition is dependent on the sender and even there I've only had one cd which had a skip.  Once you report a skip or non functioning cd it is removed from your trade records and you get your 'credit' back.  The clam shell cases provided for mailings are usually okay, but on occasion they can 'buff' a spot on the cd surface with bad usps handling.  This is easily prevented by laying in a sheet of lens cleaning tissue etc and there are blogs on site with other shipping tips as well.  pm me for more info if interested.

I really like Amazon's used cd dealers too, good prices and the cd condition always seems to be as stated. Far more reliable than GEMM from my experience.

Does lala still treat each CD in a set as an individual trade?  That is the dumbest practice anywhere-I ended up with three out of four CDs in a Bob Marley boxset because of that.

Their artwork rules are bizarre, too.  Artwork is optional and the back (tray) cover NEVER has to be included unless the shipper is kind enough to ship it.

Nearly everyone here is an audiophile and would be greatly disappointed at the condition of "tradeable" CDs on lala.  They are tradeable unless they actually skip-and even then are tradeable if you can find one CD drive that can play them.

I tried Lala for about four months-some 40 trades or so, but I'm now on permanent vacation until at least their multidisc set rule changes.  Lala has a nice vibrant community but it has a ways to go.

I quickly stopped trading double discs for that very reason, I still only have 1/2 of the only one I requested.  As for art work, you sign up for the front cover art/booklet or cd only.  Most who trade art work are like minded and always trade back cover plate as well.  I think I averaged about 90-95% with BP included.
