Hi Robert,
How would the sig 30 drive his B&W's , or maybe some hawthorne SI's?
The 801S2 is an 87dB, 8-ohm (4-ohm min) speaker. I don't see the Signature 30 having any problem driving them.
The Hawthorne SIs are a lot more efficient and again, the Sig 30 would have no problem with them. If your dad is thinking of going the High Efficiency route, there are plenty of others to also consider!
And does the sig 30 need an active pre with a passive output cap coupled squeezebox ( boldercables probably) He feels he might miss the drive of his very beefy sounding wadia... my squeezebox sounds thin and rounded of on the low-end compared to his CDP.
I recommend feeding the modded SB3 directly into the Sig 30.... no active pre needed. The Bolder Cable modded SB3 will work very nicely with it. Sit the SB3 on top of the Sig 30, use a short interconnect cable (less than or equal to 0.5 meter will work), and you can even use the SB3's remote volume control.
Hi chckr,
If I have not already said so... welcome to Audiocircle and the RWA forum!
But the 805 are small monitors so with big B&Ws, the Sig-30 may not be enough.
Sometimes, the larger multi-way speakers are actually more efficient than the smaller monitors, so they play louder with less power. The 801 S2s use a big ol' 12" bass driver, so they should be able to deliver more oomph than the smaller 805's... but I never tried them so this is just a guess.

Thanks for posting,
Vinnie
