Fried Modwright Power Supply
« on: 27 Mar 2007, 01:27 pm »
This is my first new post to this community so I hope I am doing this correctly.  I recently purchased as used Sony NS-999es Modwright player used on audiogon.  Love the player.  However, the "old style" power supply went up in smoke and is unrepairable.  I have read several posts in AudioCircle about users who have purchased the new tube rectified Modwright power supply and absolutely love it. Unfortunately, I cannot afford the cost of the new tube power supply at this time.  I was hoping that one of the site's members who had bought the new tube power supply would be interested in selling their old solid-state unit.  If so, I would be interested in hearing from you!

Thanks
System:
Modwright Sony NS999ES
(2) Sony CDP-CX450
Joule Electra LA-100 MK3
Thorens TD 145
AES Sixpacs
JBL L300's

I have been working with Dan and he is a great communicator.  It was Dan's assesment that the supply was completely toast and un-repairable.  Dan has offered three different choices of new power supply but no used or referbed unit.  Cash is tight so I'm trying to squeek by until I can afford the new tube rectified power supply.  Thanks for the help with where to post my thread.

I have one of the original 999 power supplies laying around that was obsoleted when Dan upgraded my player to the next generation early in '06.  It is the one in the smaller case.  PM me or talk to Dan on whether it's the right one.  Tom

I have one of the"old" power supplies.  It worked fine. I just upgraded to the new one two weeks ago.  I would be willing to sell it to you at a very resonable price.  Let me know if you  are interested.

I thought I'd update everyone on the saga of the "fried power supply"!  First of all thanks to everyone who offered to help!  This is a great site with many wonderful members.  My new "used" ps 9.0 power supply arrived this afternoon and I waisted no time in plugging it into my system.  Fired it up and a very loud hum immediately erupted from the power supply.  I thought initially that maybe the power supply needed to just warm up a little.  Well in about 5 seconds something inside (haven't taken the cover off yet) began to glow orange.  Crap.  I shut off the power supply.  I next thought that maybe my power cord was the issue all along so I disconnected the umbilical and swapped out the power supply cord to the wall.  Turned on the power supply and blue light on and quiet.  Good!  Plugged the umbilical to the NS999es and tried again.  HMMMMMMM.  So I shut off the power supply and swapped out the umbilical and tried again.  HMMMMMMM.  Crap!  I've emailed Dan Wright and I expect to hear from him shortly as he is a great communicator!  Don't know if the player failed and took out my original power supply or if the power supply failed and took the player with it.  I am really bummed.  My system isn't the same with out my modwrighted NS999ES.  I'll keep you all posted.

All the gear I own has been purchased used.  I guess having issues with one piece is expected.  I agree that Dan will help.  He's been a great help in working on this problem.

The issue with the "new" use power supply was my issue.  I was unaware and didn't think to ask if there were any wiring differences between the different power supplies available for the Modwright Sony NS 999ES as the umbilical cords are the same.  After contacting Dan Wright about the situation it was clear that the newer power supply I tried using is a substantial upgrade and requires the Sony to be re-wired to accommodate.  I've sent the Sony and new power supply of to Dan for re-work.  Dan is a great communicator and has been a tremendous help working through my issues.  Great CD player with tremendous customer support!

Thanks Dan!
