Issue with Optoma H31
« on: 19 Mar 2007, 03:00 pm »
Hi all... looking to see if anyone else has had this issue with their optoma or other projector.

I've been enjoying my Optoma H31 for a couple of months now.. I've really been impressed with the picture- especially considering I haven't built my screen yet  :thumb:

I've had one problem that has occurred twice in the 20 odd times I've used the unit.  I'll be watching a movie and then it goes black.  The bulb powers off with the bulb indicator light orange.  The first time I waited for it to cool (fan stayed on), then powered it back up again with no problems.  The second time, it would run for a few minutes then power off again.

In both cases, fan was running with no blockage of the air vents.  Room was not especially hot (I live in montreal and it is winter).   Not sure why it would do this.  Since the bulb has less than 100 hours, I am hoping it is not already dying on me....

any insights?

thanks
jim

That's odd.  I have an H31 and have no problems in the (almost) 1 year time I've used it.  What's the ambient temperature where you have it mounted?

I've had an H77 for about 3 years with no issues. I always run it in economy mode. Is your H31 ceiling mounted or near a heating vent?

the room is actually pretty cool (montreal in the winter), kids usually want a blanket when we watch movies  . right now it is sitting on a shelf with a small book under the rear feet to point it down.  as far as I can tell none of the air vents are blocked so there should be pretty good circulation.

I was just wondering if the bulb was damaged in transport or if there is some other reason why it would shut down like that??? any ideas what this might mean?

hmmm, might have to call visual apex and see what they have to say.

How much ventilation does it have- how close to the back of the shelf is it?  Mine is ceiling mounted so air can freely circulate around it.  Just to see if it changes anything, perhaps you could move it out into the room a ways, just temporarily.

thought I'd follow up on my initial inquiry....

well after playing with the projector and moving it around to make sure there was enough air flow (temp light never came on)... I talked to both the excellent technical support at Visual Apex and Optoma and sent the unit in...

in some of my internet searches it seems that there has been some problems with the power supply which might be why the lamp would power down.  waiting to get my new unit.

Jim, how are things? Did you get your unit back yet?
If so, what was the repair/cause?

bob

just got it back the other day....  took a while (3 weeks) but it did arrive safe and sound.  the only issue reported on the form was "lamp driver".. not sure what that really means but at least it is working now (knock on wood).  was happy with the return service, especially since i bought it in the states and had it serviced in canada.

let's just hope it continues to work

Good to hear Jim. Do you notice any difference in picture quality?

hmmmm, interesting question but to be honest it has been over 6 weeks since I have seen an entire movie on the projector so I could not say for certain.   getting old- short term memory is about ten minutes and things seem to get lost in long term memory   :duh:

Glad to see you're up and running again.  I know how much it sucks to have a PJ then have to do without- I sold my H31 to my sister about a month and a half ago and have been without a TV of any kind since then.  Fortunately within a week or two I should have a Barco 701 to replace it! aa
