TAD 803SD Studio Monitors?
« on: 17 Mar 2007, 01:45 pm »
Has anyone owned one of the many product bizzyb offers such as the Tad 803sd monitors?     Some have owned the TAD-60 tube amplifier but I dont know of many that have owned his speakers.  Trying to research on his products, most of his products are hand made in Chicago land area or atleast he claims so.  Any input on his products?

Looking into the wharfedale diamond 9.2 as well, these speakers will be for my home gym and master bedroom setup with tube stereo of course :)

Duh - thanks!

I was expecting to see something like a pro horn monitor. I guess I was thrown by the similarity (!) of Tad and TAD.

TAD make some very fine and respected real studio monitors.

Surely it's a stretch to call these "studio monitors"!

The seller is using all the "right" letter designations and numbers, for that matter!

Came to notice that he gets most of equipment made in China and then he inspects them and fine tunes them.  Dont know much about the quality but for the money  I dont think I will get them since I am looking for a better quality monitor, I cant purchase anything without any advise from other users  :nono:

I have owned these speakers for about a year.  I also own the TAD-60 which is a wonderful tube amp.  My review of the speakers are found on audiogon.com:  http://forum.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/frr.pl?rspkr&1144383917&read&3&4&

This is a good price for these speakers.

actually the Audiogon reviews, linked to above, both by Plato and Jee, where he compares the 803 to Harbeth and Soundlab is amazing - almost hard to believe without allowing for seriously impaired judgement on the part of Jee, but he sounds like he knows what he's talking about.

I've thought about these for a while - that price is almost too cheap....is the (horribly named) 'moonrock' addition worth the $99 extra?  I added 10lbs of steel shot (in a plastic) bag to the bottom of my speakers recently and it was a dang good tweek :thumb:.  My port is too high to have interfered with it....his moonrock addition to his TAD-803's is meant to smooth out the port air, too (just weighting down the speakers seems to be an excellent tweek, too, tho)

Paul is really refreshing to talk to - I bought a couple of his Iron Lung Jellyfish cords (who does this guys marketing ).

The last post in that Audiogon thread is his, typically straight-forward Paul-ism:

Or wait till you get over 50 – can’t hear the highs (>10kHz) anymore and find highs up there sound more & more like noise! Most senior audiophiles prefer a soft high speaker. I’m 42, can just barely hear 14kHz, used to hear TV set faint horizontal 19kHz power supply ringing very clear, now I’m too old.

The Moonrock (really, unfortunately named) upgrade is only $60 now shipped including PayPal or Visa/Mastercard fees.

So, I went for it.  Based on the sizable better achieved by dumping 10 lbs of shot in the bottom on my Linaeum floorstanders, this was worth a shot for $60 for my Linaeum bookshelf units.  The bookshelves already play louder and deeper than the floorstanders as it has an 8" woofer (rather than a 6.5" woofer).  My bookshelfs have the port located very close to the bottom of the cabinet, front mounted, so it's likely to achieve the effect Paul describes for his TAD-803.

Hell, I've pee'ed away a whole lot more than $60 on dumber tweeks over time...at least this is somewhat proven  :D

Hey TCG, what do you think of the rocks?

i just recently bought some subs from TAD, Paul is a heck of a nice guy.  i'ts really comforting to buy even the cheaper goods from TAD since he's only 30 minutes away.

$60 for the rocks is better than $100 for sure.   the idea of stuffing a port that's supposed to have air flowing through it is pretty wild to me...

I just ordered them last night - so I'll know in about a week.

He sure seems to be a decent chap....I bought the Iron Lung JellyFish cords from him in the past.  He does need help with his names, I think, for his goods  :(

I'll let ya' know in a week - I'm expecting outsized things for it for the measly $60 as I already found 10lbs of Ziploc bags filled with shot made a tremendous difference with my floorstanders already. My bookshelves with the 10lb MoonRock upgrade would benefit in much the same way...with addition benefits in port noise smoothing/damping.
