Help spend my tax refund - New Preamp or Subwoofer
« on: 16 Mar 2007, 08:20 pm »
OK Guys - Looking for input - where should I spend $2000

My Current System:
CARY 306 SACD - Just back from CARY
BAT VK3I
Linar (Sim Audio) W250 - 250 w Solid State AMP
Dynaudio Special 25's
Shunyata and Zu Cables - Balanced IC

MY room is is 14 X 22 with 11 ft ceilings.  My musical tastes run the gamut - but mostly Jazz - Reggae - Funk - Classical

Option 1 - Subwoofer -  While I'm relatively happy with the amount of Bass I have now - I'm sure a little more could could improve things - although I'm a little worried about integration. Leaning toward a Velodyne DD-10 or 12. Cost $1600-2200

Option 2 - Preamp - - I like the BAT but tend to think this may be a weak link.  Leaning toward Aesthetix Calypso - Cost $2900 used sell the BAT = $2000.

What do you guys think?

Thanks for the input.

Nice system. Regarding the subwoofer, you have a valid concern with integration. Back when I had my ML Aerius's, I added a SW and it took away some of the magic. Yeah, I had bass but there was a tradeoff. If you like the sound of your system and are looking to refining it, I would lean towards the preamp.

Thanks for the responses.  I don't really have any issues with the sound now - Honestly its mostly the upgrade bug.   :D
My previous speakers where full sized Proac 2s and if memory serves I'd guess the Bass was similar or perhaps a tad more robust.

BAT VK3I
Cost $2900 used sell the BAT = $2000.

I think its only worth about $1200. $2900 might have been MSRP, I believe it sold for about $2200 +/- depending on options. I know a friend bought one with a remote, no phono about a year or so ago (it was a couple of years old) for about $1200.

There are a couple of BAT VK5i’s asking around $1800 on Audiogon. A newer model BAT VK3iX asking $1900.

Without a doubt (in my mind) you'll get the biggest improvement by adding a good subwoofer. It seems the SUB 500 is made for your speakers. As always I suggest high passing the main speakers. Electronics (unless malfunctioning or poorly designed or ill-applied) have such little impact on the sound relative to speakers and acoustics.

As George said, room treatments will definitely help.

Rather than throwing the BAT out, why not have it modified?

As I look at the inside of the unit, a couple of things jump out at me. If you see those red cubes, BAT says those are "custom encapsulated oil-filled signal capacitors". To me they look like the Chinese paper in oils but I can't tell for sure. If they are, that is why your BAT is the weak link. In my experience, those tend to sound rather dark and veiled. If any of those are Wima's, the same holds true.
Oh, I can't tell if they've bypassed the power supply caps (it sorta looks like they did) but I'd change out those Wima/Chinese PIO's for a decent cap.
If you want to really invest some money, replace all of the power supply caps with Black Gates.....and yes, they are worth every penny IMO.

Next, it looks as if they are using pretty standard resistors in, not only, the signal path but also the B+ supply. There are some considerably better sounding resistors than the carbon films and carbon comps they've chosen.

Not sure if Bill at Response is taking on mods to products he isn't selling but he would be the guy I'd go to. The mods shouldn't run more than about $800 to $1k (pure guess) which leaves you ample for room treatments plus some money left over for some new music.

Those (type) mods, will gain you tons sonically. When you hear it, you won't believe it is the same preamp, honest.

                It's all about parts quality.

Agree with Zybar (George) - room treatments, especially with your configuration.  You will not be sorry.

I agree with Scott and George....mods and room treatments for $2k...you might end up re-thinking the need for a sub.  Better to correct what you have that add another piece to the puzzle.

    Jim,

Get a hold of a Spectrum analyzer and measure your room. Then treat the room with inexpensive homemade room treatments. Say a $500 budget or less. Go buy a HSU Sub for $1200 and then remeasure and adjust room treatments. Then go buy some new music with the rest. You already have a good system, oh and maybe some NOS tubes to play with.

If you want a good little sub for music without breaking the bank that will blend with your Dyns, look at the little ACI sub.  That'll leave you money for treating the room too.

Thanks again for the responses.  Seems like room treatments are the front runner. Unfortunately my listening room doubles as my living room and my wife would have very little tolerance for any visible room treatments if they would be recognized as such.  Are there any solutions that can work in a non-dedicated room?  My room has wood floors, 10x12rug 2 sofa, chairs etc. also it open on one side through double doors to the hall and to the back to a dining room.  Should I look at DSP solutions like a TACT EQ?

Thanks again!

The tact is not going to deal with decay time issues unfortunately.  Maybe you could DIY some treatments and disguise them as plant stands, etc.  I've seen that done effectively before.

TACT might be the only option taking into account the significant other factor.  If there was a outboard unit that could allow you to partner with the BAT, it would have been sweet.

BUT...

Most likely unless you go to a TACT DSP way, which is not necessarily affordable, you might not realize a significant sonic benefit that would have justified the expense to begin with.

Depending on how the paint would match in your place, painted 8th nerve adapts could blend in...though they'd blow a big part of the budget.

There are diy things you could do that are visually acceptable.  Besides stands for the plants, plants themselves in the corners of the room will help.  I hung a few near the upper corners of my old apartment and noticed some sound improvment, and the room looked a lot better with some green in it.

Marigo dots... on all the capacitors in your component chain...
My best tip!
The Cary really responds to this!
