I myself only see 2 possible definitions of Audiophile..

One whom enjoys music period!
He or she may as funds are available upgrade to equipment they know and most all will agree is better at reproduction accuracy.

The other I term as a Audio PILE, not phile. They've gone beyond music being number 1 then replication accuracy. Why the PILE part, well they being to form piles of equipment that just doesnt measure up in the fantasy they are now living. There never happy thinking just around the corner something might be better etc.

Kinda the best example of this and I mean a close one is the drinker. You have a person that enjoys a good drink every now and then and never over indulges, thats like a Audiophile.
Then the alcoholic, Audio Pile, over indulges, trys to sway everyone around him his way, lives upon lies and now begins to believe them and so on. You know like Cords need to be special and break in. Power cords do wonders etc.

I enjoy an alcoholic beverage every once in a while. I also enjoy getting roaring drunk every year or 2. Never say never. Everything in moderation, including moderation.

I could argue that the first couple categories wouldn't meet the necessary "neurosis threshold" to be true audiophiles, but the Audiophile Rating Scale (for better or worse) could be on a graded scale with low numbers being the blissfully ignorant you listed.

What about when our hearing starts to go? Is there a separate category for those in denial?
