Best Kid music to keep me sane.
« on: 15 Mar 2007, 04:27 pm »
My kids love music and I have it playing for hours at a time.  Kids are 4 & 2 1/2 yrs old.  We take turns between Dads music and kids music.  What recordings can I pass off as kids music that aren't obnoxious to grownups?

I've got some Dan Zane, Jack J., Elizabeth Mitchell, and what others do you AND your kids enjoy?

I love this disc. When I checked the reviews on Amozon, I found out kids love it too. Great recording AND performance. If you're 'of a certain age' you'll remember it from saturday morning cartoons.

Rob,
Sorry not going to much help.  But I wanted to share with you what has been going through my head all morning.

I have some nursery rhyme LPs that she likes but I play all the old folksy records and she love them.  For some reason, she gets Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Hank Williams, PP&M and others.  She will be 5 in 3 months.

yep,  got RAFFI,  it's good, kids love it- but can tire me for hours on end.

So far Joni Mitchell, CSNY, Damien Rice, Phil Roy,  Sara K.  don't bother them too much.  I enjoy passing these off as "kids music" and they sometimes "buy it"

Veggie tales stuff- whiney voices just kill me.

Thanks for the recommendations.

My younger daughter will dance to anything, she is only 16 months old mind you.

My older daughter has exclusive interest in these tunes, at 3 1/4.

Bob Marley - preference for Buffalo Soldier on repeat
Shania Twain - Don't - knows ALL the words too!
Pink Floyd - Another Brick in The Wall - loves the refrain "Hey, teachers, leave those kids alone!"

They will generally take music with interesting beats well, so that has me often playing tabla based fusion music, and other "world" music.

No one else in my house likes the spacemusic I like.  Wahh!

I was also going to recommend Jack Johnson, but you have him.  Raffi will get old.  A bigger selection is important!  There's always Johnny Cash.  He makes a lot of family-friendly songs!  ;-)

I recorded these years ago which fit into the tabla based fusion music mold:

click on listen.

I recorded Indiscretion and Salt Water.
"Indiscretion" in particular put our young one to sleep. When nothing else worked I'd take a drive and put him in the back with that on the car system. He had a word for music and a different word for that music!

I still think, based on reactions from people of all ages that Indiscretion should heve been/might still be huge in India.

Remember Jason and the Scorchers?  Jason Ringenburg now has an alter ego:  Farmer Jason.

"Hey Ho - Anarchy in the Pre-K".  You gotta love it.

He has a few kids releases over at amazon you may want to check out...

Just in case you think it will get better, one of my 10 year old's favorite singers is Fergie, and the Fergalicious song.  She has to listen to the "clean" version.

Where did I go wrong?

Our guys are 14 and 19 now and, though it is a cliche,  it seems like only yesterday they were wee ones with a shiny, multi-colored cassette player with big buttons and a microphone (!) listening to all their "kid" stuff. Countless Raffi tapes rise to the top of my memory - everything else fades beyond reach.

Additionally, I kept (continue to keep) a group of CD's apart in a kind of kid section with things like a Folkways selection of cowboy music, Woody Guthrie's songs for little ones, Los Lobos' Papa's Dream, etc. I don't have them in front of me and so can't recall most titles in the group, but one that received the most play Peter, Paul and Mommy.

In truth, they were fed a broad musical diet in our home, and today listening to and playing music is everyday for them.

I would second the recommendation for Bug Music as well as something by one of its sources, Raymond Scott. Here is one we have but I notice there are a few recent releases that people like.

My oldest (at about 4) liked the Beatles' Abbey Road, particularly the bass line that opens the album.

There is terrific album by Kronos Quartet called Nuevo that I'd consider for small ones - it has a lovely rendition of Perfidia played on a leaf.

Have fun!

One CD I love, but may be too "old" for your kids:

We Shall Overcome The Seeger Sessions - Bruce Springsteen

I think this CD rocks, although Bruce can get to screaming sometimes.  The DVD that comes with it is good, too.

My 5 year old granddaughter & 4 year old grandson love that cd . They also like the soundtrack to the " Cars " movie . Many good songs on that too .

I have a 2 year old and a 4 year old.  I'm surprised we're two pages in with no mention of Lauri Berkner.  She's got lots of fun CDs, at least one DVD (that the kids LOVE), the music is more complex than a lot of schlock on the radio, and is pretty darn good stuff.  The recording's not bad either.

One Disney movie that we let our girl watch -- Fantasia.  She has seen it many times and now recognizes the music without video.  I even have Fantasia soundtrack CDs.  Good stuff.
