You probably don't need the 23db of gain offered by the magic5; but Mapletree seems to offer custom gains for the 2SE; so maybe also for the magic5? A phone call to Lloyd could answer your question(s).
In my opinion, a gain of approx. 12db (4X the signal) is all you probably need from a line stage. Maybe a bit less. If you don't run a phono amp for lp's; you might get by with 6db in the linestage.
My opinion is that having some gain in the line stage is desireable for dynamic/headroom reasons; but too much is just a source for added noise and/or limitations in the rotation of the volume control. Depends a lot on your speakers, room, and volume desired.
