I am pushing Maggies with a Butler 2250, need a TVC with 3 or 4 inputs and 2 output, please>  Whaddya got???  Must be in Audiogon 8 or better condition.  Am in the Puget Sound region.  Have sent several emails to the Promitheus cat, no reply---is he taking a break???

I have used my Mapletree u4se pre with the Butler and found it to have very good synergy between them.\

Never used a Butlet amp, but i'm thrilled with Promitheus' TVC.    someone just posted that Nick Chua is ill right now, hopefully he'll be up answering your e-mail in a few days.

killer bargain for $500 or less, and a few are popping up used as well.

                 If you go the TVC route make sure your CDP has as output voltage of 2V or more for best results. It also helps if the input sensitivity of your amp is low say below below 1V. if not go active. I ran Maggie 3As for years with solid state amp and tubed pre. until I bought a Audio Research DR250 MK2 Servo [tubed]. That was the best sound out of the Maggies we ever heard. The 3A was voiced with those amps.

Thanks Rollo---the input sensitivity is listed as 2V for 250 Watts at 8 OHMS, 400 watts at 4 OHMS.  What do you think of the Mapletree pre??

You probably don't need the 23db of gain offered by the magic5; but Mapletree seems to offer custom gains for the 2SE; so maybe also for the magic5? A phone call to Lloyd could answer your question(s).

In my opinion, a gain of approx. 12db (4X the signal) is all you probably need from a line stage. Maybe a bit less. If you don't run a phono amp for lp's; you might get by with 6db in the linestage.

My opinion is that having some gain in the line stage is desireable for dynamic/headroom reasons; but too much is just a source for added noise and/or limitations in the rotation of the volume control. Depends a lot on your speakers, room, and volume desired.

lonewolf here at AC uses bridged Butler's in one of his systems, I think. Maybe he'll chime in..or you could zip him a PM..

Maggies with a Butler....good setup. Now you need a preamp....I would go active.
I see topround has mentioned the Maple Tree....does work good with the Butler....I tried it here myself. It would fit your budget....
Want better.....get a used Modwright....would sound even better. It is what I use.....and it does have the required inputs you need.
I also own a good passive preamp....a Bent NOH. That.....didn't work as well with the Butler....but it did work well with the tube amps I own.

I have heard the Promitheus TVC....good bang for the buck.....but as with my experience with the Bent passive with the Butler.....I did prefer an active tube preamp (soundwise).

Correct!  Ordered a Response Audio Jolida 3502, it was dropped by UPS and damaged.  Waiting for UPS to resolve it with Bill Baker---Guess I am wedded to the sweet sound of EL-34 amps crafted by the talented Mr. Baker.
