Hi Gerald,
And welcome to the VMPS circle as an RM40 owner. As well, congratulations on scoring a pair of one of the most interesting and best performing speakers on the Planet (IMO)

Mjosef's suggestion to start with the sticky for set up is a good one.
You'll find 100 different owners might give you 100 different suggestions and in most cases most of them will work.
The adventure you're about to embark on is one where you can tweak and adjust your speakers to your system, room and personal preferences.
That is why there may be so many answers and opinions. In the next few months, you will develop a keener sense of awareness to very small changes of the Bass system through adding and subtracting small amounts of mass (putty) to tune the response and reduce the distortion of the bass system.
You will also learn how to adjust the "pots" (L-Pads) first with "gross" adjustment, and then with "fine tuning" "clicks".
In general, the first thing you do is "converge" them to cross about 1 foot in front of your face when seated in the listening position.
Pots will normally be set on the high side of 12:00 to 1:00.
I would assume you will have to "add" putty. Now if the bass sounds incredibly tight, low, and detailed, do add or subtract anything.
If it is a touch "woolly" you likely will have to add.
But keep in mind, that all tuning should be done "after" you feel your placement and listening position have been established.
You might get more accurate and better responses if you list your room size and particulars, as well as the system you are running.
Please give us a running account of your endeavours, and the results. If you like them, we will enjoy your contentment. If you feel you can get more out of them, we'll pitch in and offer suggestions.
