SP2 vs BP26
« on: 13 Mar 2007, 01:05 am »
I'm currently using an older BP20, which I like, and I'm thinking about upgrading to a BP26 (line stage only). My local dealer has an SP2 on display that I could audition at home. Does anyone know if this would sound the same as the BP26? It's my understanding that the analog line stage is the same in both, but I know the BP26 has an outboard power supply and I'm unsure what difference this would make sonically. Thanks.

In 2-channel bypass, the SP-2 should sound the same as your BP-20.
From what I have read, it appears that the BP-26 is a big improvement on the
BP-25/BP-20/SP-1.7 (bypass) /SP-2 (bypass). Bryston is offering an upgrade
to the BP-25 http://www.bryston.ca/pdfs/07/BP25toBP26.pdf.
I assume that this also applies to BP-20's as well.

The SP-2 and SP-1.7 DACs are also very, very good for 2-channel.
It might be worthwhile to have a listen to the SP-2 in digital mode.

So unless I'm misunderstanding you, the active line stages of the BP26 and SP2 would not sound the same - the BP26 should be better.

Unfortunately, I was told  that my BP20, which uses the old BP-PT power supply, could not use the new power supply.

Thanks.

Hi All,

The upgrade to the BP26 can only be done on the BP25 not the BP20.

Can I upgrade a BP25DA to a BP26DA? (Does the DAC now get its own power in?)

Thanks,
Muski

Hi Muski,

Yes -that is one of the big advantages of the BP26 with DAC - the DAC has a separate power feed.
