Connectors what is the best conductor option?
« on: 11 Mar 2007, 04:46 pm »
I have a set of DH Lab Q10 bi wire cable, good cables to say the least however they came with "cheap" super large spade connectors and some banana plugs.  So far I like the WBT line of product and DH Labs however they are kinda expensive.  So I headed down the search for a good quality locking wbt style or regular locking style.  Since my wires are silver, it seems that many connectors are made out of brass gold plated, silver over rhodium, brass and the search is endless.  Since my wire is made out of silver, besides bare wire what is a good conductor for my setup?  Currently I have banana plugs into the amp and spades for my VSA speakers.

I've been looking online and I came across the following brands, like I stated before I love the WBT line but I am an "audiophile" on a budget, lol! If anyone have come across the product listed below and would like to share their experience please do....

WBT
GLS
Exodus EX EXP BANA
Analysis Plus
Altona
Cardas

Unless you have something against bare wire termination, it makes no sense to add another connection/material to the mix imho. Having said that, the advantage to be gained is dependant on the ability to really torque them down and stay that way.

chg, you might consider the Audioquest spades.  They're made of softish copper with direct silver or gold plating...ie with no intermediate plating.  Check AQ's site... http://www.audioquest.com/ ...click Speaker cables and then Connectors.  I've seen them at other retailers...Percy, maybe Parts Express or Parts Connexion...but can't remember exactly.  If you need just a few, e-mail me at jeffreybehr(at)cox(dot)net and I'll let you know exactly which sizes I have.

The best connector is no connector. Try the bare wire and listen, you may very surprised. However the original design may have taken the impedance of the connector  into consideration and the removal may alter the sound. You will not know unless you try.
