Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: Definitive 200

Here is a link to the list:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?docId=1000062961&plpage=1

Looking at the list, I would say I own roughly 75% of the albums, so I at least like what they have on the list.

What do you think?

While "Supernatural" is way too high at #13, that isn't nearly as big a joke as Michael Jackson's "Thriller" being at #3. You gotta be kidding. Michael Jackson never did a "rock" song in his life.
And Pearl Jam ahead of "Abbey Road"? I like Pearl jam, but puh-LEEZ.

The fact that Michael Jackson and Madonna are in the rock n roll hall of fame show what a farce it is.

Hmmm.... the fact that "The Marshall Mathers LP - Eminem"  is even on a Rock n' Roll list is odd enough.

I guess they have a different definition of "Rock and Roll".

Well, I guess it depends on what your definition of rock is...

Thriller is still the best selling album of all time and I would say it was a mixture of rock, pop, disco, and funk.

In any of these lists, newer music will tend to have an edge over older music.  Does it matter that much that Pearl Jam and Nirvana are the two albums in front of Abbey Road?

Out of the top 15, the only one that I feel doesn't belong is Carole King.

Thanks George.

This list inspired me to play Nevermind tonight.  What a great album! Cobain hits home for me.  I think I'll put it back into rotation for the next while....brings back memories.

I was a little surprised to see Metalica make the list so many times.  I'm not complaining. :thumb:

Hi,

I can't believe that ac/dc's 'back in black' made #17 on the list.  I thought there previous album was better.  I also can't believe that they beat the Doors on the list.

IMHO this is a ridiculous marketing exercise, and is pretty much devoid of any credibility. It's more likely the "list of popular albums that we've already recovered costs on but can probably sell a bunch more of if we tag them with some critical 'cred'". It's from the Merchandising association, after all.

I mean, any 'definitive' "Rock and Roll" list in which "London Calling" barely breaks the top 100 and that doesn't include "Blonde on Blonde" at all clearly has no aspirations to be taken seriously.

The mere fact that it's NARM-based makes it a "popular" list, not artistic per se.  The thing is quite debatable at almost every level (Shania Twain beating out Revolver), but the biggest thing I see in it is the LARGE selection of soundtracks (to me, as irrelevant a category as Greatest Hits packages).

That list has some of the worst albums of all time. Which is proof that the list, like the Grammys is crap. Most people wouldn't know good music if it fell out of the sky and fell on their face. Thank God the list was based on sales, not talent.
