12V OK for 12.6V heaters?
« on: 9 Mar 2007, 04:25 pm »
I am thinking of spending a little cash on the Welborne Labs high current regulator.  At most, I guess that I would want to pull 2.4A through it, although if I use four tubes such as the 12SN7 the current draw would be more like 1.2A.

OK, so the kit by Welborne labs goes up to 12V.  Would this lower voltage be a problem for 12.6V heater filaments?

No problem.  If your curious, check out Pete Millet's site and his blog on under volting triodes.  Some say it will make the tubes last longer and can reduce distortion.  I think it hasn't been proven yet, but 12V on 12.6V heaters is A-OK.

No problem at all, I'm running 12SN7's at a bit under 12V and they sound just fine, better actually than using them at their nominal voltage.  Strange, and I really didn't know why, and I still don't.  Lynn Olson also ran into this issue with his amps, and he writes about it on his blog, it's about halfway down the page.

Thanks for the replies.

Do you think the Welborne Labs kit will give better noise reduction on the DC than going with a schottky bridge: 22,000uF cap; small value resistor; 22,000uF cap?????
