Flexible tube amplifiers ...
« on: 4 Mar 2007, 09:27 pm »
I know Wright Sound has the mono 25 which allows tube rolling for the power tubes (KT66, EL34, and 6L6). I was wondering if there were any other manufacturers that made similar products, meaning a base design allowing the interchange of power tubes without having to twiddle with anything. I have a number of unused power tubes and would like to try them out in my system.

Thanks in advance. :D

If an amp has bias that is user adjustable, then most all EL34/Kt88/6L6 family amps can be rolled with any of the others in that group.  They have different bias points but otherwise are interchangeable.  So a fixed bias amp would not allow changing of output tubes but adjustable bias amps would.

Juicymusic audio has these mono's that I believe will accommodate a lot of different tubes.
It has a real easy bias adjust. Just flip a switch I believe, and twiddle a dial to get a green light. 25w or so. It's called pCat. http://www.juicymusicaudio.com/webpages/poweramps.html

Hm, I don't think the JuicyMusic amp will take other tubes.

The Quicksilver amps are cool -- the look is reminiscent of vintage amps.

Response Audio 3205 allows for use of 6550's, EL34s and KT88 type tubes.
I have a 3205 by the way.

I have at TAD-60 which will accomodate 5 or 6 types of power tube via an easy to adjust bias.  Amp also has adjustable feedback, adjustable triode and ultralinear and more.  Truly a good deal in audio.  You can also find older version on audiogon for pretty cheap.

There are a couple of reviews here and alot on audiogon.  The guy who builds them is a really good resource also.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the help.

Surfing around for other reasons, I found Response Audio. I guess I was checking out the site after reading a review on their mono blocks at 10Audio and came across the stereo amp version. It looks interesting.

I remember the TAD amp now. I found the site one day but couldn't remember the name or address. It's one of the reasons I asked for help. I'll bookmark it this time.

I have a lot of options now. The question is how to make a decision. I guess that's the fun part.

Best regards everyone.

At the bargain end of the flexible-tube amp spectrum, you may want to check out the 22wpc Ming-Da MC34-B for $375 now on Audiogon that has adjustable bias:
