PIO Caps and Felecia in a TEAC?
« on: 4 Mar 2007, 12:09 am »
Hey Guys

Has anyone ever tried Jensen PIO's in the TEAC AL700?  Or a built-in Felecia?

I think there's enough room to do both...given all the free space in that case.

I'm almost done with my diycable.com KIT61 speakers and need a new project.  I bought a TEAC a while back when you could still find them for $100.

JDUBS,

I wouldn't recommend the Jensen PIO capacitors for a Felica power conditioner. Extended foil construction have many things going for it, but they lack the self healing capabilities of metalized capacitors and are likely to self destruct is used accross the line with full mains AC voltage accross them because they could well be subjected to spikes >2,000v. They'd probably be fine as the the betwixt and between (between the 2 transformers) where they'd be subjected to nominally 14vac, but the 18uf cap would be ridiculously expensive. You could use a far smaller one as a bypass of that larger capacitor, but even that would be very expensive.
The intent of the Felicia project was to take advantage of low cost surplus transformers, that were available for less than $10 each, and to allow a DIYer to construct a conditioner competitve with commercial units in performance, but at lower cost. Yes, I used expensive 600v .47uf and smaller Auricaps (which are self healing metalized caps) for bypass duties, but those are quite a bit less expensive than the Jensen PIOs.

Using appropriately rated Jensen PIOs for their intended role of signal coupling is a subjective call....

FWIW,
Paul

Paul, I should have been more specific   I was thinking of the Jensens for signal coupling duties.  The Felecia would be assembed using the "usual" parts for that application (including the Auricaps as you noted).

Speaking of Felecia parts...what's everyone using for reasonably priced transformers these days?

Just for the record, its "Felicia".  I corrected the misspelling in the sticky.  Carry-on!

I have no idea as to the efficacy of Jensen PIO.  I would just advise that most exotic caps are made by the same few cap manufacturers as the standard issue caps, they are just custom ordered and then rebranded.  They may or may not be different then other caps in the manuf's extended line.   Good examples can be shown of some Mundorf caps that are incredibly similar to some of the non-basic Solen caps (Solen.ca sells a whole host of the Solen line).  So inquiring minds, might be curious enough to order a couple of Solen's similar caps and do an A/B against an uber exotic cap.  It may be an enlightening/educating/enriching experience.

Josh, sorry about the mispelling!  I thought the Jensens would be a safe, although pricey, bet.  If I have the time, I may do a comparison similar to what you mention.

Btw, can anyone tell me where the signal input points are on the amp board?  I want to go straight from the RCAs to the board, bypassing the volume board.
