A little help needed to setup my new SW-12a sub!
« on: 3 Mar 2007, 08:01 pm »
Well the final piece of the puzzle is completed.  Danny's SW-12a/PR-12a sub!  Man does this thing add some lower bass to my setup.  I was really happy with the bass produced by my A/V-3, specially compared to my old NHT setup but there are clearly some notes I have never heard before in my life.  I'm listening to Cassandra Wilson, ouf, there are a few low rumblings in there I didn't know existed.  Then I put a Portishead album, darn, unbelievable the amount of low bass there is in these albums.  OK, here is what it looks like:

I bought the Rythmik Audio A370 Special Edition for plate amp and I think there are too many settings for my very limited audio knowledge so I hope some of you can help me a bit.  I read the instruction PDF (http://www.rythmikaudio.com/manual/A350_SE.pdf) that comes with the amp but it didn't help much.

So I set it up by ear but I'm not sure at all this is optimal.  I currently have the crossover around 50Hz, the phase at 180, the level around 11 o'clock, the "bass extension freq" at 20 and the damping at mid.  I also have the subwoofer low pass filter internal switch at 24db/oct roll off, which is supposed to be best for music instead of the 12db/oct.

My main concern is the phase, I really don't understand the explanation in the manual and I think this is quite important.  If you can shed some light on this one I'd really appreciate it.  Any other suggestions will be appreciated as well.

I'd shoot Brian (Rythmik Audio) an e-mail about it or give him a call and let him explain the boost settings.

Thank of phase as time arrival. The control allows you to dial in a delay to keep them in phase with the main speakers.

If you like you can set the crossover point up higher so that it overlaps further onto the main speakers.

Then adjust the phase so that you get the most output, meaning that the sub and main speakers are coupling and their output is the greatest. A setting on the opposite side of the dial should give you the most amount of cancelation and less output.

Once you find the spot where they are most in phase then turn your crossover point back down until they give you a flat response (not overlapping onto each other).
