How to re-solder Groneberg speaker cables?
« on: 3 Mar 2007, 06:27 pm »
Hi,

I want to remove all the banana clips from my Groneberg (Premium) bi-wired speaker cables and replace them with spades. I want to have this locally done, so what should I be asking for in terms of kind of solder and termination issues? My thinking on this is that spades wil be more secure. Also, a banana clip came off recently and a hi-fi store did a quick solder for me at no charge. I don't know if it was done correctly.

Thanks.

I suspect that Klaus used the WBT solder but you can certainly call and ask him. It is silver based and if my memory is correct is 4% silver. There are other brands but you sure don't want to use what you'd typically use for soldering pipes. Most of those are somewhat corrosive and will eventually eat some copper. Of course that is fine if you're plumbing and also mostly free of lead now but it's tough on little copper strands.

Ahh the good ol days of eating lead and other toxins, you just can't get the good stuff any more. :)

I believe Parts Express carries the stuff if you're going DIY.
