GIK Tri-Trap question
« on: 3 Mar 2007, 07:06 am »
Just curious- is the TriTrap sturdy enough to use as a speaker stand for a 2 way monitor? aa  They might work very well for the rear speakers in my HT rig if they can hold the weight (Monitor Audio GR10's).

For those speakers I'd say probably not a good idea.  According to the Monitor site they're about 22lbs each.  Now, we do stack Tri-s on top of each other but in that case the weight is distributed more.  You can try it but that's not what they're designed for.

Since the boys at GIK don't recommend using their tri-trap as a stand, you might want to contact Ethan at Realtraps.com to see if they are still making the exact product you are looking for.

I know they used to, but I don't see it listed anymore.

We're working on a few new things but they're not ready for distro yet.

Like triangular panels for upper corners, I hope?!

Hi Bryan,

I am not trying to open a can of worms by asking this question.  What if a customer wanted a custom built TriTrap made to support a 22# or higher monitor speaker, couldn’t you offer to do it for a nominal up-charge?   You could glue wood dowels in the three inside corners from top to bottom.  The end user would then make his own support top shelf or you could offer to make one at a reasonable charge.  To this novice’s brain, I don’t know how you manufacture them, it doesn’t appear to be a major labor-intensive activity but I could be out in left field.  :dunno:  Food for thought.

Yeah, the GR10's are fairly hefty for bookshelves.  Shame, that woulda killed two birds with one stone.

I've got a pair of the tri-traps, and there's no doubt they can hold the weight. The top it thin, and will flex under the weight. With the speakers on top it will be top heavy and wobble. If you cut a piece of wood, doesn't need to be more than 1/2" thick, the shape of the top, and attach it to the wall with little brackets, it should work very well.
