Good stuff.
I just got my TAS yesterday, and ETM was a much more pleasurable read.

<Blushing> A most humble thanks. Am really trying to ramp up things in many aspects and really appreciate your kind words. My workload has increased of course, yet certain improvements were, quite frankly, a bit overdue.

Add to that my other hobby (www.EnjoyTheTrack.com) and my summer will be filled to the brim!

Thanks again and as always...

Weird, please try again as it seemed to work for me.

Well, INSANE $$$ was doing 45+ tracks day with the Italian car and because there is very little to zero info about modding, tweaking, etc, many of the parts were custom fabricated, specially sourced, and priced through the nose due to needing one-off bits... (1 example) only to learn you underdid the springs and blew out the shocks so has to rethink the shocks and springs... and anti-roll bars...  and... and... With the FC there is PLENTY of data, parts, etc.

So the more <cough> normal <cough> Van Diemen Formula Continental will be much cheaper. Guess it is all relative. Tires are about 25% less for the FC than the Ferrari per set... but then i'll really be chewing through a few sets of 25 and 35 Hoosiers during the season. Got a nice, huge spares package with the FC from the previous owner so can work through some of the spare bits as needed.

AutoX is fun and safe. Heck, at least you are doing it while many people wish they could (or worse, do it on open, public roads!). For me, like to feel like i am going somewhere, so road course tracks are my choice. Funny thing is, am one of those crazy guys who actually loves LRP in the wet... a VERY slippery affair like driving on oiled glass in some spots when you are near the traction limits.

Glad to hear you enjoy the cones, there is some VERY serious competition there!

Thanks Chris  :thumb:

As I mentioned the Alerions aren't perfect but they sure were a fun speaker. You get all of that single ended, single driver magic that fits into a small room. Cool part is you can drive them with the true fleapowered SET's. Although I didn't switch (and I probably should have now that I think about it), a 45 at about 1.5wpc would have driven them just fine in a small room.

The other article I have up there should be of interest to a few budgetphiles, the Aperion Audio 632 speakers.

http://www.enjoythemusic.com/magazine/equipment/0307/aperion_audio_632lr_634vac.htm

At $600 a pair, these little speakers deliver fun by the truckload. Granted, they have that 'front row' presentation but they are really easy to drive (read=they like tubes), go really deep for a mini-monitor, have plenty of detail and aren't going to break the bank.

I almost hate to relegate these to rear channel duties in my HT, they are that good. I can see now that I'll be yanking them out of the HT rig and using them in amplification articles on a fairly regular basis.

Nice review by Scott...... :thumb:

I especially liked the section on room treatments.  :thumb:

Too many reviewers still have very little or no room treatments.   :nono:

Makes you wonder how they can possibly be hearing what the gear they are reviewing is really capable of.

Thanks for the review Scott.

Thanks George,

I'm really lucky in the acoustics department. I've got a good friend of mine who owns an industrial insulation company so he lets me have leftovers from his jobs so I've got plenty of OC rigid board and mineral wool to play with.

The other one is, although I've been through The Master Handbook of Acoustics at least a couple of times and feel I understand whats going on in my rooms (for the most part), Bryan (bpape) of GIK Acoustics lives about 15 minutes from me. So when in doubt, I give Bryan a call since that is his area of expertise.

You're right about writers and their rooms though. I'm one of the really lucky ones in the sense that my wife is extremely tolerant of this damned obsession. I've got three separate dedicated listening rooms set up in our house. The big one (the Blue Room) is 38 x 15, the Redrum is 16 x 10 and the Grape Room is 9 x 11 (not to mention the HT rig). Each room reacts completely different when you set up a pair of speakers in it.

The thought that you can just get any old pair of speakers in for review and plop them down in the typical writers room is a complete mistake. As most everybody here on AC knows, speaker to room coupling is crucial. Put the 'wrong' speakers in the 'right' room and they won't perform very well, in fact they may well sound horrible. On the other hand, match the speakers to the room, add a well thought out treatment or two, and now you are cooking with Crisco.

Good example, right now I've got Bill at Response's Musica Bella AV-1 speaker's in. I started out with them in the my big Blue Room. They did fine in there but they (and I) much prefer them in the medium sized Redrum. In here they just plain rock. They are loads of fun to listen to and are much easier to drive with lower wattage tubes (PP el84's or even 10 watt 6V6's). You don't need monster wattage amps like my big Radii's or solid state gear to play them loud. Now, if I tried moving these into the little Grape room, I know I'd get over run with bass.

So yep, you're exactly right. As a writer, you have to know your room and its treatments limitations. If not, what you write likely won't hold true for the average listeners room.

I haven't read your review yet.  I have however heard one of the Aperion speakers, I think that monitor and it was quite good I remembered, better than you would think for the $600.   That tweeter I am sure is the Vifa D26Nxxx, which is said to be quite good if used in its range.  The driver looks like it could be a peerless.  They too make good drivers.

Wow! Give your wife a hug! She deserves it, You know you are lucky right?  :thumb:
No wonder your avatar looks like a happy chap!
And of course I have the master handbook of acoustics!!! It's superb!

Then of course the next level is the works by Leo L. Beranek!

Yep, Those little Aperion 632's are a really good speaker for the money. Best part is they are an extremely easy load to drive. They are very tube friendly. I drove them for most of the review with the little factory modified Jolida 102 at 25wpc. They are just loads of fun to listen to. Push 'em back against the wall a bit and you get tons of bass, great for rock. Pull them out a bit or use a port plug and they smooth out well enough for jazz and classical.

Imperial, you're right, my wife is a Saint for putting up with this damned affliction.
