waveguide for home theater speakers?
« on: 1 Mar 2007, 01:49 pm »
I am interested in a VMPS home theater speakers.   I was looking at the website, and there is a LCR and Dipole model.  Do these speakers also offer the "Constant Directivity Waveguide" that is on the RM40?

Thanks,

JP

Hi JP,

Due to the dispersion pattern of a Dipole speaker the CDWG is not particularly effective, so the CDWG is not on the Ribbon Dipole.

Brian and I were discussing the possibilities of making the LRC configurable for the Wave Guide.  To do so, the Neopanel would have to be re-oriented, and there is not enough room in the cabinet length to do so.

However the vertical dispersion of the LRC w/ the FST tweeter is quite good and usually quite sufficient for placing the LRC on top of RPTV's and angling toward the listener.

Where the CDWG "is" particularly effective is when one configures their system in such a way (generally only doable in Front Projection) as to be able to place the RM30C in the standard vertical position.

And one speaker that many "overlook", which is an incredible Center speaker, is the RM2.

I have a client, who has a 65" Toshiba RPTV that sits upon a platform (I think it was formerly his desk) which raises the screen 6" above the top of the RM2, and he runs them (3 RM2's) across the front of his HT to great success.

I also took a lesson from one of our dealers out in Ill (thanks Larry) and picked up "Screen Research" Acoustically Transparent Projection Screens for clients who wish to put their speakers "behind the screen.

But to bring everything into perspective, the models that easily adapt to being used as CENTER speakers are:

RM v60 Vertical Only = $4450 Retail List (acoustically transparent screen use)
RM40 either Horizontal or Vertical = $2499 Retail List w/FST
RM30C either Horizontal or Vertical = $1750 Retail List w/FST
RM2 either Horizontal or Vertical = $1545 Retail List w/FST
LRC Horizontal Only = $1150 Retail List w/FST

I am worried for the RM30 center with the tweeter off to the side.  Does that  make for a bad sweetspot?  Will the RM2 be in CDWG?  Does the CDWG work for RM30 as a center?

If I decide on VMPS for my theater I would want this CDWG for all speakers, but the price list makes this very confusing to understand what is possible!

Thanks

JP

I have the RM30 center with the tweeter off to the side.  To be honest, I can't tell that the tweeter is off to the side, except at certain times on TV.  On movies, I can never tell.
